I have never owned a Precision M6800, but on my old Precision M6700 I upgraded the GPU to an Alienware GTX 980M 8GB card.

Depending on which screen is installed on your machine, you might be able to upgrade to a Quadro P4000 8GB or P5000 16GB. (the screen needs to be mobile DisplayPort because the Pascal series Quadro mobile cards do not output LVDS)

With any upgrade to a GPU that is from a newer model Dell, you will need to mod the .inf file for the drivers to install.

Thank you for the reply, it's a wonderful bonus to the other reply by @JamesJAB1

This probably solves the Linux driver issue's than, as well as the BIOS problem if faced.

OK, so the GTX 980m also works on the system. That's actually great, that could work, as it's already better than the K5100m.

I wasn't aware of the Quadro P4000 8GB or the P5000 16GB. I don't know if the display is compatible, I will have to check that somehow. The M6800 has all three display output ports.

And I also use Linux, so I will have to check how the drivers would work with those GPUs.

Thank you very much for the reply.
