80 gig SSD drive in Alienware- only 11 gig showing.

When i specced my laptop i chose this for the HD option.

 750GB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s + 80GB mSATA SSD Caching

Yet when i go to System Information window it tells me that my SSD drive is

Size 10.50 GB (11,271,139,328 bytes)

Do I have an infestation of incredibly small and hungry HD mites, or have Dell done something clever with my other 69Gig?

That is indeed an 80G mSATA drive - however, part of it is likely dedicated to the quick start function, and part of it is set aside as a cache for the main hard drive.  The partition that's left is the one you see.  If you want to install Windows to it, you're going to have to disable the cache function and repartition the SSD for WIndows (and 80G will likely limit what you can install -- though it will get you started, it won't be hard to outgrow an 80G WIndows drive).

Windows 8 64-bit requires 20GB, so I don't know how it fits on a10.5GB hard drive.

More like you are interpreting the information wrong.

Thanks for that, a perfect answer. I was just curious from a technical viewpoint.
