CD Drive Won't Eject Discs (Alienware X51)

My hard drive recently crashed in my Alienware X51 desktop computer. It was replaced, Windows 7 and all of the drivers have been installed onto the new hard drive. My problem is that now the eject button for the CD drive does not function anymore. I am able to eject discs by going to My Computer then right clicking and selecting eject, but it just drives me crazy that I can no longer just eject my disc. The computer features a slot loading disc drive which requires the operating system to manage that button I guess. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I googled this problem, but have had no luck finding a solution.

Here is the description of the disc drive: Slot-Loading Dual Layer DVD Burner (DVD±RW, CD-RW)

Hi dustinsb93

Thank you for providing the update. I sincerely apologize for the technical troubles you have experienced with your computer.

To isolate the issue try below mentioned steps:

Check in Safe mode:

Restart the computer and tap F8 on Dell Logo page and select Safe mode with networking. After booting into Safe mode, check if the drive ejects using the eject button.

Also, while rebooting the computer check if the drive ejects using the eject button.

Run Microsoft fixit from below link which would resolve any software issues regarding the drive:

Also, update DVD drive firmware from below link:

Awaiting your response!

Hi dustinsb93,

Try running the Dell diagnostics to see if your drive has failed. To test your CD/DVD drive from the utility partition:
1. Reboot your system. When you see the Dell logo, hit F12 to enter the boot menu.
2. Select Boot to utility partition or Diagnostics.
3. Select Test System.
4. Select Custom Test.
5. Use the arrow keys or mouse to select your CD/DVD drive.
6. Insert a CD or DVD.
7. Click Run Tests.
8. Write down any error messages.

Hello,

I'm having basically the same issue that I can not remove the cd from my drive but mine issue has a twist. Dell came out to replace my keyboard and ended up ruining my laptop. Now it says I have no operating system. It will turn on and allow me to get to the diagnostic screen but not actually get into the laptop. They sent me a new laptop but sent me my old one to attempt to remove my cd, they have offered me no assistance. Can anyone help???? I can be privately emailed at chevgrl30 at aol.  Com. Thanks in advance

Hi Chevgrl30,

I am sorry for the inconvenience. I suggest that you contact a local technician to get the disc out of the CD/DVD drive.

I know this post is a little old and hopefully your problem was solved, but I recently had the same issue, and after doing some Googling, I found this article at Dell.  For some reason, after reinstalling Windows 7, it had not installed the ODD (Optical Disk Drive) driver. After installing the driver, my drive works perfectly now.

I am also having the same issue. I can eject from "My Computer", but not from the button on the box. It does not respond. I tried updating the firmware below, but to no avail. Any suggestions?

Also, update DVD drive firmware from below link:

Hi Dajvman,

This is normally a mechanical problem with the button. Firmware does not generally fix this sort of issue. So your options are to replace the drive or live with it as is.

I do have a warranty on the system. I'll give support a call as I also have a request to them as well. Thanks.

i'm having this issue as well. happened after I had to install a new OS and now the drive won't accept blank cd-r's, it ejects them immediately. I also can't play blu-ray's without buying a newer version of powerdvd as the one given by dell doesn't work with windows 10 :/
