Incomplete defrags

Just purchased a Vostro 1500/XP Home/160 gig HD factory partitioned to 50/50.  After installing my Office XP and other programs, when I run a defrag it will not completely defrag C: drive.  I would be ok if it was just a few small files, but the file that will not defrag is:  \WINDOWS\system32\9.... which is almost 32 GB in size.  Following is the report:

Volume (C:)
    Volume size                                = 74.50 GB
    Cluster size                               = 4 KB
    Used space                                 = 45.64 GB
    Free space                                 = 28.85 GB
    Percent free space                         = 38 %

Volume fragmentation
    Total fragmentation                        = 34 %
    File fragmentation                         = 68 %
    Free space fragmentation                   = 0 %

File fragmentation
    Total files                                = 61,569
Average file size                          = 1 MB
    Total fragmented files                     = 1
    Total excess fragments                     = 1
Average fragments per file                 = 1.00

Pagefile fragmentation
    Pagefile size                              = 2.00 GB
    Total fragments                            = 1

Folder fragmentation
    Total folders                              = 6,035
    Fragmented folders                         = 1
    Excess folder fragments                    = 0

Master File Table (MFT) fragmentation
Total MFT size                             = 67 MB
    MFT record count                           = 68,347
    Percent MFT in use                         = 99 %
    Total MFT fragments                        = 3

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fragments       File Size       Files that cannot be defragmented
2               31.37 GB        \WINDOWS\system32\9

Does anyone know what this file is???  Can I delete it???  Any assistance is greatly appreciated.  I think it was left on there when the OS was factory installed.

Thanks,

Bob

You have 28gig free space and that is not enough to defrag a 31gig file. There is no good reason to have a 31gig file in that location.

This is what i would try. Rename the 31gig file and if the pc still boots up then delete it. If you have trouble booting for some reason then boot from cd or floppy and change the name back. I don't think you will have any problems after deleting it, if anything you may have a program complain about the missing file and that might help you understand what is makeing that large file.

Bluesman:

Thank you for the tip.  What I did was move the file over to the D: partition and reboot.  The system ran fine.  I did get to check with Dell Small Business and the date of the file was 3 days after the factory install and they felt it was probably from trying to transfer files over from my desktop.  I deleted the file, ran defrag and all is well.  I greatly appreciate your response....thank  you.
