Sony DRU-510A

Hi,

Can anyone tell me if the new Sony DRU-510A  will fit in the bay area my present DVD-Rom player resides?  That is without any modifications of the pc's case.

I have a 8100 with the DVD player on top and CD-RW player below it.

Thanks!

It should fit just fine. You have three 5.25 bays, you could install it in the free bay. Here is a link to removing and replacing parts.

I installed a DRU-510A in my Dimension 8200 couple a days ago. Just one minor problem. The Sony tray is at the very top and there is very little cleareance to the plastic frame. If you are not careful the tray will  not open. Somebody else mentioned this issue in an older article. Make sure the plastic frame allows the tray to open. I pushed it up as much as possible and the tray opens fine but I think there still is some friction. To fix this properly I think the bottom of the frame needs to be filed just a little bit. The Sony has a small protrusion on the bottom of its front panel which pushes the frame out about 1-2mm. This twists the frame which is not very rigid and I think this causes its top part to have a little contact with the Sony tray.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for ther replies guys!!!

I should have mentioned my configuration as it is now:

SAMSUNG DVD-ROM SD-612 [CD-ROM drive]
SONY CD-RW CRX160E [CD-ROM drive]
3.5" format removeable media [Floppy drive]

QUANTUM FIREBALLP AS40.0 [Hard drive] (40.03 GB) -- drive 0
WDC WD600BB-00CAA1 [Hard drive] (60.02 GB) -- drive 1

Will there be another IDE cable connector for another drive like the new DVD-R ? And will the Power Supply be sufficient if I do not remove one of the DVD-Rom or CD-RW drives?

Looks like you will need to remove the DVD drive. Make sure the jumper is set to cable select and use the connector that you had on the DVD drive.

Hey moga,

I have am thinking about getting the dru 510a for my 8250, but i am not sure what color to get, did you get the black or the white faced one?

Do you have a picture of what they look like I am assuming that  your 8200 has the same colored dark black/grey case as my 8250?

If you did get  the white one, how does it look in the 8250, does it stick out or does it look good that way. Thanks

I just bought a Dimension 9100 and wanted to transfer my Sony DRU-510A from my (extremely) old Dimension 4100.  I am able to connect it and configure Windows to access it, but when I put the front fascia back in place, the tray is unable to open because it gets stuck on the black bar that separates the two drive bays.  I also tried switching it from the bottom bay to the top and still had the same problem.  Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone have any recommendations?  I'm considering either:

Try to snap off the outer-most edge of the DVD-RW tray.  Slice off that black bar that separates the two drive bays.

Any help would be extremely appreciated; I have this beautiful 24" LCD that I can't watch DVD's on!

Some of the retail drives just don't fit in the newer cases. I think you're stuck buying a new ROM drive. Only about $20 so not a big deal.

Think I could just get an external USB2.0 enclosure? I've seen them for 20-30 bucks... the cheapest DVD Burner that I've seen is $43 and I'd bet it's probably junky.

ahh... beautiful.  Where can I get a good quality DVD+RW drive for $20?
