TEAC DV-W58E Firmware Update Works Great
I just updated the firmware to v.DOJ, AO6, using the floppy method posted on May 17th. Everything went smoothly and I just burned a test disc. Nero (6.3.0.2) gave me a choice of burn speeds at 8x, 6x, 4x, using a SONY +R 4x disc. So, of course, I burned at 8x. Burned 4.39GB of mixed files--jpegs, Photoshops, wavs, MP3s, .exes, etc. Burned it at 11MB/sec in 10 minutes 30 seconds. Ran the disc and all the files opened and worked fine.
Now I'll try a +RW and will also copy (legally) a movie onto a DVD and a few music CDs, too....
I'll leave the more serious testing to others, but I'm happy with the results.
Hope to hear more positive results from other members.....
Regards,
Michael

Hi Gazebo,
If the DVD you wish to copy is a commercial DVD with the embedded copy protection, Sonic will not be able to copy the disc. Dell does not have drivers for the optical drives, these are generic to your OS, you may wish to consider installing the Dell firmware which seems to have improved the drive`s overall preformance.
Tips for using Sonic can be found in Section 13-0 of the CD/RW link within my post.

Hi,
I have the same DVD drive and I'm having the following problem.
I am trying to copy a DVD using Sonic RecordNow software. Problem is that my DVD ReWriter drive is 8x and the blank DVD+R discs I bought are 4x. The only choices for recording speeds are 1x and Max. I need speeds in between 1x and Max.
I tried using Max speed twice but the DVD copy was useless. I then downloaded and installed an updated driver for the DVD+RW drive from the Dell tech support site but I still don't have any more choices for write speed other than 1x and Max.
Any ideas?

Hi Gazebo,
I too have always been fond of Nero`s software. I recall someone posting information that there is an update for Sonic`s software, I could not find one at Dell, may have simply missed it. You might consider checking out their web site as well.
Also verify that the drive does have DMA enabled, some Members found when flashing other drives, they tended to revert back to PIO mode, this can cause these type of issues.
Best Regards

Thanks for the info Predator but I don't believe that is the problem. Sonic also shows one speed for burning CDs too. I'm looking at the Tools, General, Advanced screen. There it says Select Drive Speed. On the left, it has CD on the right, it has DVD. It only has Max and 1x as options. At this point, I dont have any disc in the drive except my blank DVD+RW and that is what it shows.
My old computer had Nero and it was much better software. It had a lot of advanced options for selecting speeds for writing CDs.
By the way, I already updated my DVD drives firmware to Firmware verison D.0J.

Using 4x Memorex media gives NOTHING new with this firmware update using the latest Nero. It still only shows up 4x burning.......my NEC ND1100A only burns the Memorex media at 2.4x even though it's a 4x burner - it won't even let me select 4X! I'm guessing this might be a 'bad' media issue, but Memorex isn't a 'cheap' brand by any means! I'll have to get some new DVD media to see if the TEAC will truly let me burn 8x on 4x media - that's what this update is supposed to let us do, correct?

Cybertic,
According to the information from the download site, it does state "8X burning on 4X DVD+R media"
remember though that all media is not created equal.

The update did wonders for me. I am using memorex dvd+r 4x media and they are burning great at 8x using latest nero patch. I was only getting 2x burns since I've owned this drive. I was just about to give up on when the new firmware came out. Here is what DVDINFOPro shows for the blank memorex disk I have.
Media Information
Region information N/A not a DVD-VIDEO
Media code/Manufacturer ID RICOHJPNR01
Media Product Revision Number 02h
Free Blocks 405405696
Free Capacity 4.38GB(4.70GB)
Book Type DVD+R
Media Type DVD+R
Media Id Code Speed 4.0x 5540KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 8.0x 11080KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 6.0x 8310KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 4.0x 5540KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 2.0x 2770KBps
Data area starting sector 30000h
Linear Density 0.267um/bit
Track Density 0.74um/track
Number of Layers 1
Keep in mind that Memorex media is not all the same, some comes from different manufactures.

Nevermind, the Media Info is still reading it from the drive firmware I see. I inserted the SAME media into my NEC ND1100A and it lists:
Region information N/A not a DVD-VIDEO
Manufacturer ID cannot be read
Format Capacity 4.38GB(4.70GB)
Free Blocks 405405696
Free Capacity 4.38GB(4.70GB)
Book Type Unknown
Media Type DVD+R
Media Id Code Speed Unknown
Available Write Descriptor CLV 2.4x 3324KBps
Data area end sector 23053Fh
Linear Density Blank Disc
Track Density Unknown
Number of Layers 1
Doesn't even list the 4x Write Descriptor. Apparently this Memorex is junk. Blah.

Available Write Descriptor CLV 4.0x 5540KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 2.0x 2770KBps
Data area starting sector 30000h
Linear Density 0.267um/bit
Track Density 0.74um/track
Number of Layers 1
This firmware actually seems to have SLOWED my Teac 8x drive. When ripping a DVD it used to rip at 4x, now it goes at 2.4-3x is all. I don't know what to make of it yet. I'll have to get some new media to try it out, though. Regardless, the firmware patch is NOT letting me write at 8x on my 4x Memorex media.

Media codes and speeds I've found using new firmware
RICOHJPN R01.002 4x DVD+R burn at 8x (These discs are made by Ritek but have a Ricoh media code.)
RITEK R02.001 4x DVD+R burn at 4x
RITEK R03.002 8x DVD+R burn at 8x
using Nero 6,0,0,28
