qsi cdrw/dvd sbw-242

I have an Inspiron 8600. All of a sudden my cd/dvd won't work. At all. I tried the trouble shoot and everything. The Device manager says everything is alright, but it won't play or read anything. Very frustrated. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Didn't work. I don't know if it matters, but the drive appears to be making a whining noise and it clicks a bit...Never used to do that....

try this but please be careful while doing registry editing

first of all start the run command type regedit .it would open the registry file follow the tree as follows

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

\SYSTEM
\CurrentControlSet
\Control
\Class
\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

flnd the word upper filter click on it.then On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.4.Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry  On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

then restart the system

if it making a clicking noise use the f12 key at boot and then highlight diagnostics in one time boot menu and hit enter and then when you reach the dell diagnostics in custom test run a test on optical drive if it gives any error code other than no cd detected it is gone
