XPS 8930, Upload Speed Dropping

Hi All,

I'm at a loss as to what I can do to fix this, last time it happened it was a simple fix by getting a new ethernet cable. However now that did not work.

My Specs are as follows

i7-9700

RTX 2060

16GB Ram

Killer E2400 Ethernet

Now for the problem - I have gigabit internet, and my download speeds would hover around 800-900Mbps, while my upload would sit around 500. Now they the upload is dropping to around 100...but the 100 isn't a "stable 100" as trying to stream at a 6000 Bitrate on twitch yields me dropping frames constantly, so I'm stuck on 3500. Now the last time this happened I bought a new cable and all was back to normal. I also got my brother to run a test on his PC, with his results being 800 down 400 up. So that rules out the network being the issue.

I've tried - IP release/renewal

                 Disabling Large Send Offload

                 Uninstalling Re-Installing Drivers

                 Full Network Reset

Is there anything I can do or is this an issue with the card itself? Like I said, its only my upload thats affected and it doesn't seem like its actually a full 100, when trying to upload/stream I can barely above a 3500 bitrate without it causing frame drops on OBS.

If its NORMAL in safe mode its a good bet that KILLER NETWORKING is Killing you.  USB2 Driverless GIGABIT Ethernet with all killer interfaces DISABLED will help.  I would DISABLE THEM IN BIOS AND REMOVE ALL DRIVERS related to them.  You should be getting support from your ISP,

VERY GOOD QUALITY CAT6 cable is required.

https://www.amazon.com/Maximm-Cat6-Snagless-Ethernet-Cable/dp/B071WX8MXD

https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Ethernet-10-100-1000-Compatible-Chromebook/dp/B003VSTDFG

BELL is cranking the speed down because you are NOT a business with static IP and its NOT 1.5 GIGABIT FIBER

https://support.bell.ca/Internet/Products/Home-Hub-3000-modem

https://www.bell.ca/Bell_Internet/Internet_access

Assuming optimal network conditions. A wired connection and at least one additional wired or wireless connection are required to obtain total speeds of up to 1 Gbps with Gigabit Fibe 1.5. Maximum speeds can only be obtained on a wired connection.

@xAutobot  - All you have to do is click Start>Run and type in: services.msc and click OK.

When that opens, disable all Killer services, except Killer WiFi, if you're using a Killer WiFi card, and then reboot. You don't need any of those Killer services to use the Killer E2400 Ethernet that's in the XPS 8930. I disabled those services on my XPS 8930 and I only use Ethernet on this PC without any problems.

And FWIW, the XPS 8930 doesn't come with SmartByte software installed...

For starters, Killer E2400 Ethernet is not a "card". It's built into the motherboard.

Your upload speed to Twitch shouldn't be causing you to drop frames. That's a download issue.

  1. How long is your Ethernet cable? And is it rated as a CAT6 cable?
  2. Have you checked the Link Speed between PC and router?
Right-click the Ethernet icon on the taskbar and select: Open Network & Internet Settings. Click: View your network properties. What Link Speed (receive/transmit) are listed there?
  3. Are other devices on your network hogging bandwidth?
  4. Do you have an intruder on your network?
  5. Do other devices on your network have a higher data priority for bandwidth than your XPS 8930?
Look in your router settings. Sometimes called "QoS" settings.
  6. Speed also depends on your ISP's (and general internet) traffic, especially if you're down/uploading on a popular site, even if it's not an issue with your home network.
  7. Click: Start>Run and type in: services.msc and click OK. When that opens, right-click and disable all Killer services, except Killer WiFi, if you have a Killer WiFi card. Do not change anything else in services.msc. Then reboot and see if that helps. You don't need any of those Killer services.
  8. Have you scanned thoroughly for malware recently? You can use Malwarebytes (free)

So I just spent an hour going through this list - yes it is a cat6

The speed its showing is 1.0Gbps

No I'm the only one home atm and the results are the same

No I went though our network and saw nothing different

Theres no QoS setting on the HomeHub 3000 sadly

All Killer Services except "killer Network" are disabled as disabling that disables my ethernet

And yes just to be sure I ran another scan and theres still no threats.

Like I said, its weird, it did this before and I bought a new cable and it fixed it but this time a new cable didn't fix it, and it only started becoming noticeable on the 22nd.

Just for reference this is the difference I'm seeing - however the 105 Upload isn't stable enough to support a 6000 Bitrate for streaming. And file uploads take a lot longer than they should for a 105

So upon further research - it was recommended I boot in safe mode that way all non essential services are innactive - speeds were normal. HOWEVER I also booted back into normal mode with all non microsoft services disabled and the problem returned. So I'm chalking it up to a windows service causing the issue but I can't figure out which one

Non Linear Upload vs Download speeds mean you have Cable or DSL  not FIOS.  Different frequency for each type of data.  DOCSIS 3.1 technology also uses Active Queue Management, a technology that significantly reduces download delays, commonly known as latency, and dramatically improves responsiveness download streaming applications such as online gaming and movies by limiting upload speed to very slow speed as low as 120KBPS.

There is no fix for this.

You can turn IP6 off and use ONLY IP4 as well as turn off Live tiles and other bandwidth stealing things.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > services >TCPIP6 > Parameters

%SYSTEMROOT%\PolicyDefinitions

with PRO windows and domain.

ADMIN COMMAND PROMPT

netsh interface teredo set state disable
netsh interface isatap state disable
netsh int ipv6 6to4 set state disabled

Run Admin Command Prompt and make sure IP6 services are Disabled

Then type

netstat -b -o -a -r -n

to see how many other cans are tied to your tail like a ball and chain.

With all the notifications and active start menu tiles and other nonsense turned off there are ZERO IP6 addresses listed in the ADMIN Command Prompt

@RoHe After disabling everything Killer Related(and I removed the control centre months ago when it was causing lag issues on League of Legends) the issue still persists, and I'm running Windows 10  2004 with all the cumulative updates done, I'm very particular in keeping my PC up to date, and under the startup tab there isnt anything spectacular running thats not a windows service, aside from discord and steam, but even with both of those fully closed out it still does it

There are TONS of things to turn off and it DEPENDS on what kind of Internet as to other bandwidth issues.

DSL and Cable are among the WORST for Upload Speeds.

One of the first things I reverse on a win10 machine is to STOP the

Replace Command Prompt with PowerShell Right Click Context menu.

Turning OFF Live tiles in start menu, Turning Off Auto install of suggested APPS,  CLEAN INSTALL with ONLY LOCAL ACCOUNT NO MICROSOFT ACCOUNT, Turning off ALL APP Notifications,  Turning OFF suggestions,  UNINSTALLING APPS like Skype and One Drive that start when windows starts and EAT bandwidth.

Turning OFF update strangers PC's on the internet.

Disabling ALL IP6 services.

Using ONLY IP4

makes a huge difference.

run this in admin command prompt

netstat -b -o -a -r -n

If you see a lot of connections etc and Addresses you now know why your pc is sooo slow.

RFC 1918 non routeable addressses aka only IP4 addresses should be all that you see and only for you.   127.0.0.1 is loopback

@xAutobot  -

Did you recently update to Win 10 v2004 or to the brand new Oct, 2020 (20H2) version?

I have Killer Network Service disabled in services.msc on my XPS 8930 and the Ethernet works. I don't run the Killer Control Center, so maybe you should disable that on the Startup tab in is Task Manager and see if speeds go back to normal.

What else is loading automatically on the Startup tab in Task Manager?

@speedstepSee what I'm confused about is I've always had IPV6 off because my Bell Home Hub 3000 doesnt support it and games I play also use IPV4. Where I'm confused is my brothers PC is getting the crazy upload speed while mines sitting at 100 but acting as if its only 10-20. It only happened after a windows defender update too which makes it even more confusing

Open Admin Command Prompt and type

netstat -b -o -a -r -n

IP6 and teredo and ISA TAP are ALWAYS installed and Always enabled.

There should be no IP6 addresses including loopback.

IPv4 to IPv6.

ISATAP: Transmits IPv6 packets between dual-stack nodes on top of an IPv4 network.

Teredo: IPv6 connectivity to IPv4 hosts.

The IPv6 prefix starts with 2002: followed by the 32 bits of the public IPv4 address. This gives a /48 prefix which can be used to provide 65536 LANs with a /64 each. Teredo is a built-in mechanism in Windows systems that is used to give a single system behind an IPv4 NAT access to IPv6. Like 6to4 it uses public relays. Teredo combines this with a setup protocol using Teredo servers (by default those hosted by Microsoft) to detect and break through the IPv4 NAT. That means it sends to microsoft so they can get into your IP4  non routeable RFC 1918 firewall and addresses. 6to4 is the simplest of the three tunnels. Laid out in RFC 3056 and 3068 (released 2001), 6to4 works by creating a sort of imaginary NIC ("pseudo adapter") that gives you a peculiar-looking but functional IPv6 address even if your local network's not running IPv6 . Teredo (RFC 4380, 2006)

netsh interface ipv6 6to4 set state state=disabled undoonstop=disabled

PowerShell is slowly replacing things like the netsh commands.  To remove 6to4 from PowerShell, type

set-net6to4configuration -state disabled

C:\WINDOWS\system32>netstat -b -o -a -r -n

There are over 25 different things you should turn off and 7 things you cannot turn off. Windows updates and Feature Updates and other nonsense will "turn crap back on" so you have to check status via command line and re disable stuff sometimes.  Its not every day but it is a constant battle to maintain control and privacy.

Notifications, Active Tiles, Update Strangers on the internet, crappy spamware "suggestions", Hints, and other spyware that's now built into windows.

What does the ADMIN COMMAND PROMPT  say
