Dell XPS 13 9370 USBC ports stopped working mostly

I woke my computer up, and then the external screens stopped working.

Now, the left 2 ports only work for charging, nothing else (lsusb shows nothing plugged in).

And the right side port only works for basic things like a thumb drive or mouse receiver. But no longer work for screens.

This is the same behavior on two different linux OS's, in different kernels, and i did the latest BIOS flash update with no change in behavior. It was working fine for the last year in the exact same setup and no updates were installed when this happened.

Any ideas?

I've also got this exact problem. The two USB-C on the left hand side have stopped working for anything but charging the laptop. The USB-C on the right hand side continues to work for devices. It also seems like the same issue those with the 9380 are reporting here https://www.dell.com/community/Linux-General/XPS-13-9380-Ubuntu-18-04-left-side-TB3-USB-Type-C-port-issue/td-p/7248637

Is this being looked into for the 9370?

Thanks

Same here, dell XPS 9370, left ports only do power and right port only USB. If I connect my P2720DC monitor to the rigth port the USB ports of the screen work but nothing else.

Last night I flashed the latest version of the BIOS released by dell, no luck. Reinstalled windows with the build of november 2019, no luck.

Did you guys ever figure out what the issue is/was? Laptop is out of warranty and I can't justify the cost to have it sent to Dell.

Same here.

For me it first stopped charging from any port. Then when I tried a couple hours after, it could charge, but the 2 thunderbolt ports on the left would not work. The right one is still ok.

This happened to me too on my 9370. What is going on? After the warranty fails, everything breaks down??

We cannot work this way and this is a really expensive laptop!

I have the same issue with mine as well. All ports can charge without issue but only the right hand USB can be used for peripherals.

Not too sure how long it has been going on for as I rarely use the USB ports but I attempted to use DP over USB C and spent a while trying to work out why it wasn't working, then I tried a flash drive in both of the left hand ports and it kept whinging about an unrecognisable device within Win 10.

It does render the Thunderbolt capability useless as the right port does not support it.

I have all the latest BIOS and drivers according to the "Dell command updater"

Not too impressed as I had issues with the Wifi card for approx 8 months when it first came out and had to have the motherboard changed, which did not fix it then had to have another visit to replace the CPU cooler as it was rattling.

Assuming this is a not driver/software issue, it could prove to be quite an issue.

I have the exact same problem and it seems it happened pretty much at the same time you post on this forum @dannyjjj. Hit me up if you have any clue.

Same here. with xps 15 9500. running on latest bios 1.4.0. any help?

January 10th, 2021 10:00

I have exact same behaviour with 9370 running windows 10.

two usbcs on the left work as charging ports only (no monitor detected when connect to these ports)

The ones one the work with one monitor but second one I daisy chain get the lower resolution (I have two u2719dc monitors)

All worked fine yesterday.

Please help.

I found that the following helped.

1. restart the laptop

2. disconnect power from two monitors

3. disconnect gigabit ethernet to usbc from monitors

4 .power on laptop and monitors.

I seems that XPS 9370 cannot drive two u2719dc + gigabit ethernet to usb 3.0 connected to monitor usb hub + plus keyboard mouse webcam connected to first monitor hub etc.

I bet at monitor start up these speeds are measured and daisy chaining software in monitor 1 limits the resolution on second monitor once it detects I have so many devices connected via usb to first monitor.

I will try to connect all devices other than monitors to second usbc port and see what happens

Correction. The ubc port on the left further towards the back of the screen doesn't work for anything other than power.  The other one on the left closer to the front of the laptop works like the one on the right.

On the two ports that work with a monitor I can connect to first monitor and use second one via daisy chaining but the second monitor cannot get full resolution of u2719dc. The max resolution I can achieve on the second one via daisy chaining is 2048x1080.

Is there any fix for this? I have this old laptop and though it works, this problem is quite important.

It's not the first time I buy a Dell with severe problems like this after the warranty has expired. It starts to be a usual way of 'decomissioning' devices for Dell, and it's not acceptable. And these devices are not precisely cheap.
