Malicious Software Removal Tool KB890830 - Update 9th July 2008

Automatic updates of Windows software is enable on my XP computers (see below) and today the update of KB890830 was installed.     After the installation I was unable to log-in to any of my ISPs (Windows Explorer8, Firefox and Avant on my Dimension 4500 updated at 7.00am.     I switched-off the system, modem, router and computers and later switched them on again but I was still unable to log-in.    My Dimension 4100 (Windows ME) was uaffected since, as I later found,  KB890830 is not installed on the ME computer.      I then ran System Restore and restored to an earlier date and I was then able to connect both of  the XP computers to the internet.

Since I was curious to find out if the latest KB890830 update was the cause of the problem, I updated it manually on the Inspiron (XP) and I was then unable to connect to the internet.    After running System Restore again to the condition prior to downloading the update, I was then able to connect to the internet.   I suspect that on the next occasion that the automatic update routine runs, the same problem will recur.

Has anyone else had this problem?
