I’m seeing this post almost a full year after you originally posted it, but I just got a really nice (for its age) m17x R3… I’d like to do something similar, or at least get the sticky rubber off. How hard was it? What chemicals did you use? And did you have to end up taking it all apart to do it?.
Hello @RsParrish82 Thanks for the kind words. For the sticky soft-touch I use a product here in Australia called Solvit. It is a citrus based adhesive remover. It's incredibly strong and does the job really well. I use this with a plastic triangle pry tool. It's a messy job as the soft-touch comes off like sticky glue and it can can a little while to get perfect but the end results are worth the work. I use Isopropyl to clean it up while I'm removing the goo and at the end.
Yes, I usually take the whole system apart. It's more work but it gets the best results. On the palmrest this includes taking out the trackpad and the front grills. This isn't that easy though.
