I found the following:

Resolution

1) Avamar code modified to allow  ACL's over 64K t be backed up.

This is only available in version  5.0 SP2 (5.0.105-169).  Please contact EMC Technical Support to obtain  this version.

2) **REMOVED**

To  do this log on to the Utility Node of the Server and execute the  following
command:
> **REMOVED**

I'm going to attempt this and report back

Edit by Ian Anderson: Removed advice about changing chunk sizes. This should never be done. See Re: Avamar Backup Fails with Error Code: 10014

This reply is not specifically directed at Rob but for the record, adjusting the chunk sizes on an Avamar server could caues serious issues on the server. The advice above was taken from an EMC Knowledge Base Solution that has since been withdrawn.

The chunk size parameters on Avamar systems should never be adjusted to address client failures.

Changing these parameters can cause a drastic increase in the day-over-day change rate on the system immediately following the configuration change and will reduce the overall de-duplication rate of the system, potentially quite substantially.

This issue is normally caused by an oversized or corrupted ACL on the client system. The most recent versions of the Avamar client software will drop these oversized or corrupted ACLs rather than failing the backup outright. For assistance with addressing backup failures where these errors are reported, please contact Avamar Support.
