SCv3020 troubles with replacement HDD

Having a bit of an issue with a failed drive on a SCv3020. Nobody at the company really knows how to navigate this issue as the IT guy left 2 years ago and no one replaced him.

I logged onto Unisphere and noticed a failed drive. Order the exact same model off Amazon and follow the steps outlined here: SCv3000 and SCv3020 Storage System Owner’s Manual

The alerts page shows a line: Physical Disk Location 01-28 in Enclosure - 1 has been swapped and in the hardware section 01-28 shows as 'status: down / swap detected: yes'

When I click on 'replace disk' it idles for 5-10 minutes then says it did not detect a new drive.

Not sure what else to do. I was assuming this would be a simple swap and the rebuild would start afterwards.

01-28 still shows as down and is highlighted in red.

Hello jupchurch-freewave.com,

With a Compellent system, when you replace a drive you can't simply match the drive by serial# and Model. Each drive has firmware on it that is seen by the system so that the drive is brought online and rebuild starts. Since you got the drive off amazon and not from Dell or a Dell certified reseller the drive doesn't have the correct firmware on it to be seen. Now you can't just flash the drive firmware with the correct version as the Compellent firmware is installed at the factory before the drives go out. You will need to get a replacement drive that has the correct firmware on it so that it can be seen by your system, and then the drive will start the rebuild.

Hi... are you sure this is the case? I plugged the SN of the drive here: Exos 10E | Seagate US

And it shows that this drive does not have firmware updates currently available.

Hello jupchurch-freewave.com,

Yes I am sure. When a drive is inserted into a Compellent system the drives is checked by the system to ensure that it has Compellent firmware on the drive. If the drive doesn't have Compellent firmware on the drive, then the drive is spun down and powered off and the serial# and Mac address of the drive is recorded so that if the drive is inserted into a different slot it will not power on.

What you will need to do is to get a replacement drive form Dell or a Certified Reseller that sells Compellent drives in order to get the drive seen by your system.
