XPS 8700 nVidia GTX video card upgrades,

Now that the XPS A10 8700 BIOS update is out, Chris-M would like to close the long Black screen of death thread.

Let's use this to post successes and links out to other forums with tips, tricks and how-to-resolve issues with high-end nVidia GTX cards.

This will help others choose wisely or perhaps find a solution to an already solved problem.

In the body of your post, if you have upgraded to a high-end nVidia GTX graphics card, please list the following.

* specific video card
* exact driver version
* Brand monitor and resolution and cable type: HDMI, DVI, Display Port or (yikes) VGA
* specific power supply you are using if you upgraded or indicate Stock Dell 460W.

Ask questions, link to benchmarks, describe what has gone well and reflect on what you might have done differently.

I encourage AMD owners to start a similar discussion, but let us keep this thread to high end nVidia GTX cards only.

High end should imply above and beyond what Dell has shipped, or more than a GTX 660 or GTX 750ti.

GTX 760, 770, 780, 780ti, 970 and 980 graphics cards are what I would consider high-end.

@CHUNGGY -

I would update the latest driver from nVidia vs what was on the CD.

Which monitor are you using?  What is the resolution? Which cable are you using? These can also affect the visuals.

I am currently in the process of adding a 970 in my dell vostro 470. it seems that the motherboard is on par with the xps 8500 and the clearance is up to 10 inches. My concern is airflow in the case. are you guys buying the blower type 970 or dual fans?

Dual fans one is GTX 760, the other a GTX 770. The 770 gets a little warm. I will likely add a front case fan before summer.

Hi Guys wondering if you can shed some light on what might be going on with my setup.

So i bought the dell xps8700 Intel Core i7 4790 @ 3.60GHz
Haswell 22nm Technology that came with the GT720. I wanted to upgrade the video card so i bought an evga gtx960 SC 2.0. The card will not work, when i connect the card nothing displays on the screen, i can confirm that the computer is booting correctly since i can hear the sounds. I upgraded my bios to A10 and yet i still can't get it to display. Anybody has any idea of why this might be happening?

I just upgraded to the msi gtx 960 2gd5t oc.

system specs:

core i7 4770

12gb ram (dell factory upgraded)

msi gtx 960 2gd5t oc

1 TB wd10ezex

antec earthwatts 650 watts

windows 8.1

I installed the card after upgrading to the a10 bios and viewing the forums.  Like Xavierthh  I installed my card and got the black screen on boot.  I was able to pop the little hdmi motherboard tab (not graphics card) and get a picture from that with the graphics card installed.  After about 2 hours of fiddling with it I was able to get my monitor to work from the graphics card by upgrading the power supply.  I suspect this was because I got the overclocked version.

I have the overclocked MSI 970 and I'm able to use the stock PSU. How old is your 8700? I read somewhere that some of them didn't come with the 470 watt PSU, and that could be the problem.

I ordered my XPS 8700 on Black Friday in 2013.  I did have a 460 Watt PSU.  I was upgrading from the GT 635.

So i called dell support and they worked on my computer for an hour trying to get the on board graphics to work, cause i was trying to use the on board graphics to see my screen and see if there were any driver issues with the gtx960. We couldn't get it to work so he checked the bios and it said A10, yet the dell update kept prompting me to upgrade my bios. After all said and done looks like my motherboard was corrupt so it needs a replacement. I'm thinking that the reason the card wasn't working either since the bios weren't updated properly. We will see i will keep you guys posted once i get my new motherboard.

I just bought MSI 960 and 240GB SSD also, and I haven't had any problems with either.  They were both very easy to install and I didn't have to play with bios or anything (after the A10 upgrade).  Still using the 460W supply.  Overall the computer is a lot better than it was with just the old 635 OEM---the 960 is so much better!  I'm quite happy with the performance.

The exact model of the 960 is the MSI GTX960 2GB GDDR5 OC "Twin Frozr V"

I wanted to update on my card the MSI GTX 960 2GD5T OC.  Like I said in my previous post,  I originally put the graphics card in and got the black screen.   I reseated the card a couple of times and still got the black screen.  After switching my power supply it booted in to windows.  It now seems that switching my power supply did not change whether or not it would boot.  I have in fact switched back to the OEM power supply and gotten it to boot.  It seems that there is some chance when powering up the system to not have video out.   I can turn the computer on and off a few times in a row successfully.  Then as I have said before there may be one or two times where I turn it off and back on and have no video.  The system will not power itself down.  I have waited three to five minutes before I turned it off.  I am considering putting the card in another system to see if I can get the problem there.

Hart276, if it helps, here are my system specs, which seem to be a lot like  yours:

Purchased from Dell online in March 2014.

core i7 4770 (4th gen)

8gb RAM (also factory installed)

MSI GTX 960 (replacing the GT635 OEM)

A10 bios upgrade

1 TB hard drive

460W stock supply

I know that this is a dumb question, but are you sure that you hooked up the power to GTX properly?  If the board is getting sufficient power, then from the XPS there should be a pale white light  glowing through the air grill on the side--at the bottom, back and on the left, there lighting up the letters "MSI".  I had to use the power cable 6-to-8 pin adapter in order to get it going.

It seems you must be using a different version of the MSI 960.  Mine has a 6 pin power connecter (the 2GD5T OC)  and you mentioned an 8 pin adapter.  Mine does not have any lights even when it does boot properly.  I have tried the card in the following systems with the same result:

System 1

XPS 8700

core i7 4770

12gb factory upgraded

stock 460w power supply  (and of course alternately the Antec Earthwatts 650)

oem 1tb hard drive  ( and alternately the Western Digital 1tb drive)

MSI 2GD5T OC

System 2

Asus P5w motherboard

Core 2 Quad q8300

2x2gb Pny DDR2 ram

Antec Earthwatts 650w

MSI 2GD5T OC

Before I put the MSI card in the second computer I had an EVGA GTX 460 (same 6 pin adapter as GTX 960)and 500gb hard drive and it was working properly.  So now I have put the graphics card in two different motherboards with two different power supplies with the same result.  This has occurred using both the DVI and HDMI to my monitor and HDMI to my television.  I believe I have ruled out any operating system issues by downloading windows 8.1 from Microsoft and installing it via flash drive.  I got my drivers from the MSI cd and Dells website.  I have contacted the retailer and requested an exchange for an identical item.
