XPS Screech Of Death (SoD)
We have been put on the back burner far too long. Dell has buried the original thread deep in the bowels of thise message board, so I'm here to repost it and MAYBE get some answers. First, a small introduction to the problem.
The Screech of Death (forthwith known simply as SoD) is a loud, high-pitched noise that erupts from the speakers of a Dell XPS often accompanied by a total system lockup (yes with the sound still coming).
Dell and Creative have both been unable to find a reason why this is happeneing, or even a system that they can "duplicate" the issue on.
A link to the original Thread: Here
Its 17 pages. So be warned.

Wx, I think you misunderstood my post...
I'm not being spiteful to Chris_M, In fact hes been more help to this topic than anyone else at dell. Regardless, I still think that the cards that dell packaged with the XPS are faulty, and therefore should be replaced as damaged product.
I'm just making my observations. I doubt Creative will be angry with anyone, nor do I think that they have a case if they are simply rehashing public knowledge. I removed all contact info from the message.

"You know what? I don't care about your legal mumbo-jumbo. You send an e-mail to someone, It becomes their property. THEY have the rights to make it known or unknown. The fact that you are keeping these fixes a secret, and keeping them confidential is proof that you know there is a problem even after you have denied your ability to recreate the problem. This is something that I intend to report to the Better Business Buereu."
I hate to break it to you, but the "Notice" at the bottom of that email is fully legal and could be enforced, should creative find out. All business type emails are sent out this way, and can be enforced.
On a side note, have you tried the youp-pax drivers? Chris M originally posted these last June. Chris's Post It's not Chris's fault that the cards are bad. Chris did more than anyone could have for us last year (at Dell), just look for the XPS 700 resolution thread, and read all of it. :) I know you want to take just action for being wronged, and that is all well and good, but at the same time, don't you also want a working card? (No hatefullness here, just informative and sincere questions)

Disclaimers at the bottom of emails could never be enforced... Logically, if I read the first three lines of the email, don't like what I see, then I can call whoever I like and tell whoever I like. They cannot take me to court and say 'if you had read our general disclaimer at the bottom...' - did the recipient sign up to this disclaimer? No - Did they solicit the email? No - this is just pure bullying and would be laughed at in court... Now, if this were one of a thread of emails between the parties, then the discalimer could start to gain weight - but not when it comes as a single unsolicited email from a party unknown to the recipient!! Otherwise I could send any sort of threatening or illegal content in an email and force you not to disclose the contents!!!
As for the suggestion of 'send our cards back to Dell and have them replace them with non-Dell versions', you will see that this has been suggested by many people (including me) in these SOD threads, but never actually considered by Dell. I truly feel that there is a degree of false advertising and selling going on here - Dell should be forced to put (OEM) after all components that are not retail versions when selling systems. Just so the consumer knows what they are buying. My order, and shipping note do not mention that this in an OEM version of the card. This should be legally required - if it is not already..
And thanks to Chris_M - at least he seems to be following this thread - even if he has no power to get involved in a solution.

Thanks. I'll look into both. Perhaps a retail X-Fi might work. If it screeches I can take it back. Appreciate everyone's help on this.

I had a screech with the beta that Chris_M sent, but none so far with this driver. Although I did do a full uninstall first, including cleaning up the drivers with DriverCleanerPro. But I have only done one full days work with the driver installed. It's a bank holiday in Ireland tomorrow, so it will be mid week before I can say for sure if the drivers are solid or not (for me). I would still be happier with a replacement Non-OEM Creative XFi card provided by DELL as that would take the matter out of their hands entirely...

==BBB Update===
As you all know I filed a complaint with the Better Business Buereu on Friday, August 1st. Here is the reply that I recieved.
"On August 01, 2008, the business provided the following information:
We apologize for the difficulty that the customer is experiencing with a Creative sound card on a Dell system. This information has been transferred to our technical support escalation resource and the customer will be contacted shortly."
I was Indeed contacted shortly by Creative with the following e-mail.
Hello Mr. xxxxxxxxxx,
I understand you are experiencing a squealing problem with your Dell 8100 system and a Creative soundcard. Dell has releases a BIOS update to address the problem.
The website for this fix is:
www.support .dell.com/us/en/filelib/download/index.asp?file9d=r40114
OR you can go to
www.support.dell.com and type the word AUDIGY in the SEARCH BOX
It is listed as a "Special Bios Update for the Creative Audigy
Soundcard".
Thanks,
Jeff Whitecotton
Creative Technical Support
I figured that, as this thread was the inspiration for the complaint that I should share the reply as well. However, as I have replied to dell alread, this email is for a customer with an 8100 system, NOT my XPS720 H2C -- Are they the same system? Downloading BIOS drivers are a little worrisome for me; I'm not a big fan of messing with anything that I can't easily roll back.

No the systems are not the same and the 720 does not have an Audigy card in it unless you put it in there yourself. Appears someone at Dell has gotten their info mixed up..Go figure :smileywink:
I don't recall any of the bios updates addressing this on the 720. The last couple have only been for newer processor capabilities. A06 is the lastest
