New Dell XPS 13 Fan Noise is ridiculous!

I was really looking forward to replacing my MacBook Air with the new XPS 13, but the fan noise is a deal breaker.  What I don't understand is how could Dell overlook this problem?  The Vostro V13 is very quiet and I barely notice when the fan is running.  Of course the MacBook Air is very quiet unless you are watching a video then it sounds like a hurricane.  But even with just Outlook open or browsing the web this fan in the XPS 13 is extremely annoying.

I was looking forward to finally having a windows key again.  Maybe Dell will get it right next time.  Everything else about the XPS 13 is awesome.

Hi there!

I believe I had the same problem and suffered from it for about 1 year. Really annoying but today I managed to fix this problem for me.

Basically there is a sticker on the back lid near the CPU fan that may come loose over time because it's too close to the fan and it dries up rather quickly. So, all I had to do was to remove the back cover using T4 screwdriver and remove that sticker. That's it.

I have a blog post detailing the fix with photos here:

XPS 13 ridiculous noise from CPU cooling fan fixed

I do not know if the same fix works for you. I do hope this is what was going on for everyone.

Hi florentin radi, the people in this thread are talking about the XPS 13 from 2012, which is model L321X. I believe you are talking about the XPS 13 9343, which is the new 2015 model. I advise you check out the new XPS 13 9343 fan noise thread http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/p/19617192/20726934#20726934 and post in there. I am not aware of a solution at the moment.

Interesting thread.

Very light user of newly received XPS 13, already I seem to be waiting for the fan to cut in, bracing myself for the annoyance. Alas I think this little puppy is homeward bound well in advance of 30 days unless it learns to behave in a lively fashion.

I am so frustrated with this fan issue. I have upgraded BIOS - now on A10, have backdated BIOS to A06.

I have adjusted the CPU cooling to Passive,

I have limited CPU power to 50% Max

I have blown out the cooling vents (to remove any possible dust)

But still the fan runs from pushing the power button. Constant. Loud. IRRITATING.

Oh, and the mainboard was replaced a while ago because the laptop stopped working.

What else can be done Dell?

Hi, I'm a first time dell user from Korea. I was so excited when I put my hands on XPS 13 9343. I bought it from the Korean Dell website.

But the excitement quickly changed to frustration with, You know What... the noisy fan.

I've read your post, and downloaded and tried A03 bios, but error message pops up saying "Error 255. TDK Initialization Failed"

I'm wondering if the new bios is not compatible with Window 8.1 Korean version. I've searched for A03 from the Korean Dell site, and they only updated A01.

Any thought? Any advice?

Sincerely

Hi,

The xps 13 fan get problems when till it ,  the fan was kicking most all the time then running,  since i update the window when he ask for.... the fan running well . If u use Google  Chrome the fan is getting mad but if u use Internet Explorer is better also the battery life is better.

As i said the fan was fine and is running well but that noise when till it was not good and i call dell support and they send a a replacement. This replacement is wors fan not possible to manage with updates like first one and the noise is starting when till it. Well i call them back to take away all both xps old one and the new one for a refund.  So they will collect it . About update mine comes with bios A00 and they said is last one For a UK user . Dont know if there is any new and i am not interested in xps. I am sad because i do love the display and how nice a small it is but is not that important is to experience and i am not happy to pay for something witch not working 100%.

The xps 13 replacement i got i compared with the first received the display is not that bright as the first one. But the replacement the speakers sounds a bit better.

That's it really.  Maybe i was not lucky in having a 100% working laptop . But i got two so one it should work really. But there is a problem with the machine i think or for sure a cheap fan used by dell !!!

Hi Terry,

Can't help but be impressed with your Dell XPS 13 noisy fan issues.  I have this laptop and the fan is driving me mad.  it is on almost all day everyday and i run outlook, excel and window, nothing else that should compromise the work load at any one time.  from what i have read upgrading to next bios not a god idea nothing changes.  the blogs i was reading where posted 2012 so i thought it worth a message in case something else has changed since then.  this looks like a public post so have not included my machine details.

Hope that you can help

I have the same issue, EVERYONE DOES, it has nothing to do with the bios.  The issue is actually that Dell totally dropped the ball with outsourcing it's fan design to a cheap hardware manufacturer in China called Sunon.  I took apart my laptop and took out the fan and noticed that it is a cheap peace of plastic that has a wobbly spin.  You can test this yourself by touching the fan anywhere but the center and it will wobble.  The sides of the fan are lined with teeth that touch the sides of the fan enclosure.  When spinning at different speeds it becomes more aparant and as time goes on it will only get worse as the fan pics up dust quite easily making it wobble even more.  The cheapest solution is to order a new fan from Sunon, it is only around $10, and they will ship it to you free from China.  There are several vendors with various pricing as well, but the good news is that you can do this yourself with the right size star screwdriver and a small philips screwdriver.  You can go online and find videos of people taking apart their dell XPS 13's and you can see that the Fan is just about the only thing that's easy to replace THANKFULLY.  BUT i CANNOT TELL YOU HOW FRUSTRATED THIS ISSUE HAS MADE ME.
