TB16 USB issue

We have a few users here who are experiencing issues after the most recent update to the TB16 USB drivers.  The computer seems to freeze when going between multiple monitors, USB ports are either functioning sporadically or not at all, and the external keyboard and mouse seem to stick.

We have performed the following:

  • switched out the keyboard and mouse for new ones
  • updated the system drivers and performed the latest Windows updates
  • exchanged the dock for a different one
  • changed out all cables

Please let me know if there's a bug in the latest updates and if we should attempt to roll back.

Eric

Same problem noted here with Precision 5510 and TB16.  Problem began after installation of 1.2.29 BIOS on 8/4.  Installed BIOS in attempt to address a problem with reboot after installation of Dell Support Assist update and scan on 8/3.  Support Assist, after reporting "no issues" from a scan, reports "No bootable devices were found".  Computer booted OK after this, but USB Mouse plugged into TB16 was slow and non responsive, and eventually (8 or 9 hours later), entire system became very slow and non responsive to any user input.  Had to force shutdown using power button, and then rebooted.  Moving the Logitech USB receiver to the computer USB port has provided a temporary work around.

Did you downgrade to BIOS 1.2.25?  Any special procedure, or just run the prior BIOS file, such as noted above by LMan, and then restart?

I replied on 8/4, but it appears there is a new solution apart from downgrading BIOS ver.- New update from today on dell support "Thunderbolt controller driver Ver: 16.3.61.275" has fixed the issue for me. I installed that one and the thunderbolt 3 firmware update and now I am using the front right port of the TB16 with my Lat 7480 without much lag or complete loss of peripherals (logitech unifying receiver), but I have only tested about an hour or so. Hope that works for somebody else also, or someone can at least help test as this is a major issue for our users here.

Upon further testing this did not solve, it just made it behave much differently. USB peripheral issue still very much relevant and appears from others to be fixed with reverting BIOS.

I rolled back the BIOS to 1.4 which fixed the problem.

I tried rolling the BIOS back and updating all drivers but the USB on the dock still isn't working.  When I plug the dock in I see an unknown device which seems to be an AS Media USB-related thing, but not sure.

In another thread, someone stated the latest (Aug) Thunderbolt driver solved their problem.

When you look for drivers, look at the TB 16, then your systems Chipset and Dock drivers.

A few systems just got new BIOS releases in the last day or two (including the XPS 13 9360), there was a new Thunderbolt software release, and it seems some systems also just got Thunderbolt firmware releases as well.  Lastly, the ASMedia USB driver isn't brand new, but there is a pretty recent update out there in case some aren't running that yet.

We are also having the same issue with the TB16 and a Precision Workstation 5510. The trouble started after the latest "critical firmware update"posted Aug 1st.

The issue I'm having is the mouse freezes and stops responding randomly and the keyboard will just start adding characters as you type.

If I remove the system from the dock or plug into the laptops USB ports the issue is gone.

hi LMan,

I'm seeing similar issues. So I just want to follow-up to check how rolling back to BIOS ver. 1.2.25 has been working out for you?

XPS 9360, with latest August's bios and usb driver, mouse and keyboard got frozen and slow movement. Especially when a new usb device, like flash drive or hard drive connected to the dock. Dock is TB16.

I was having the same problem as everyone else in this thread on my 9550. Rolling back to the 1.2.25 BIOS has seemed to resolve the issue for me. Laptop was unusable on 1.2.29, but has certainly seemed to return to normal after downgrading. That said, I've only had may 4-6 hours of actual runtime, so I'm not ready to say it's fixed.

Rolling the BIOS back to 1.2.25 has fixed issues for me between M5510 & TB16

Thanks LMan for your suggestion.

I had this issue with my brand new 7480 (just arrived today). It shipped with BIOS v. 1.5.2 which has a buggy USB implementation. Downgrading to 1.4.6 has fixed it.

Same problem here too after latest BIOS upgrade. Mouse momentarily freezes, keyboard halts and reppppppppppppppppppeats character (that is NOT joke, ironically it happened right there).

XPS15 + TB16.

Previous problems with flickering monitor (have 2 external) have basically gone away, but this is even more annoying.

Moved mouse to computer USB solved that part. Will have to move keyboard too it seems. Coding with repeating characters is tricky to say the least. Dangerous at worst.

Dangerous? Depends what you're coding.

Symptoms are identical to mine. Roll back to the previous BIOS and you should be OK.

How are your monitors connected? I have dual 1080p's connected with 1 DP -> DVI and 1 miniDP -> DVI and it's fine. Will be moving to dual DP with MST just as soon as Amazon ship my second U2414H, so I hope I'm not opening a can of worms...
