touchpad problem vostro 3550

Hi,

I just bought a new vostro 3550 and I've got problems with the touchpad. The mouse cursor moves all over the place, when i unplug the power it works fine!

Will there be a driver update or any other solution for this problem or do I have to send my new laptop back.

thanks.

We have had problems with the Dell Vostro 3550 touchpad as well.

I have solved this by deleting the Dell Touchpad driver en restarting windows. The standard windows driver works flawlessly.

This also works when you are having problems with the touchpad when you have an external monitor or an ethernet cable connected.

Hope this helps for you.

Hi,

I had the same problem with the touchpad in my vostro 3550. First I thought it was the driver. But all driver where up to date. I installed Ubuntu - but the problem was still there. Obvously it was not the SW.

I phoned Dell hotline and they suggested using a different external power supply. First I thought it does not make sense. However, I gave it a try and guess what - the problem was gone.

I phoned Dell again and asked for an other power supply. Next day it was there. Now the curser is smoove. No more mouse cursor jumping.

Don't ask me what is wrong with the old external power supply. I do not have any idea as I don't see a connection with the touchpad. But obviously it works.

I had similar situation when I first gotten the Vostro 3550, but I solved it by doing the followings.

On the left bottom corner, you will see date, speaker, wifi..etc.

Then, once you click the triangle you will see the mouse pad button.

You go to the mouse setting, and the reduce the sensitivity of the mouse, and increase the speed of the mouse.

Then, click apply and see what happens.

Only problem right now issue that I am having with the touch pad is whenever I am playing game, it freezes up quite a bit... =/

I recently purchased a Dell 3550 and I experienced persistent problems with the TouchPad - the mouse arrow would move erratically or not move at all. The problem occurred only when the power supply was connected. Everything worked fine when running from battery. Using Windows 7 Device Manager I uninstalled the Dell TouchPad driver (Alps version 7.1209.101.204), restarted the laptop. Low and behold Windows, on startup, decided to automatically reinstall the exact same driver (which I did not want it to do) and to my surprise the TouchPad has worked perfectly since. I surely have tempted fate by sharing this news and it will stop working in the weeks/months ahead! :emotion-1:

Sorry folks, following on from my previous post, fate was indeed tempted. My touchpad problems returned. I contacted Dell who recommended I uninstall (and delete) the TouchPad Device Driver (Alps) which would result in the laptop using the default Microsoft PS/2 Compatible Mouse device driver when restarted. I completed this action and the TouchPad is now working fine.

Hi Roshan ,

Thanks a lot for posting your reply.Actually what has happened is quite mysterious!!I have uninstalled the touchpad driver the previous day!!and here is the most interesting part;I didn't reinstall it!!my touchpad problem is apparently(keeping my fingers crossed) gone!!but this i must admit that initially the speed of the mouse was low but then after increasing the speed i feel its working fine!! Strange!!

Hi Hights of confusion,

Glad that the touch pad is working. So once you uninstall the touch pad driver and reboot the system, system automatically picks up the native driver for your hardware (touch pad) from with the Windows operating system. This makes the touch pad work even without installing the touch pad application (which also includes the driver).

My solution would have been to reinstall the Touch pad driver from our support site.By using the system model and operating system, I was able to find the direct download link for the touch pad driver for your system.

www.dell.com/.../DriverFileFormats

The above driver was released on 6/7/2011 and under the Fixes  and Enhancements its shows Improved touchpad cursor working sensitivity and smoothness.

So my suggestion would be to continue to use the system the way it is, as the touch pad is working fine.If in near future if the touch pad starts acting up,you can download and install the above driver and see if it corrects the problem.

Thank You

Roshan.
