Does your icon look like this? If so, then the speaker is muted:
Are you using Windows 10 or 11? If using 11, click the speaker once and then click Mute/Unmute button in the window that appears. A disabled device doesn't usually show up in the taskbar, but it does show up in the Sound section of Control Panel.
From here it can usually be re-enabled (unless there is some sort of issue). The sound device will not appear in Control Panel if the computer does not recognize it.
