boot with usb

I'm trying to install Linux on my Dell laptop using a bootable USB stick. However, the laptop crashes during startup whenever the USB is plugged in. I'm unable to access the BIOS unless I unplug the USB first. I need help configuring the BIOS settings or boot order so that the system recognizes the USB and boots from it without crashing.

Sounds likely the flash drive itself is faulty -- are there any bent pins?

It would help greatly to know what model system you have (and whether it's in UEFI or Legacy mode) and whether whatever Linux distribution you've set up supports UEFI (most don't by default) if the system is in UEFI mode (or is newer than five or so years ago, when legacy mode pretty much vanished).
