It's likely there is either an issue with a mainboard component or wiring on the mainboard.
Bear in mind the age of the system means that it can be replaced for well under $100 -- probably less than what a board will cost (and if you have to pay for labor to have the board replaced, you're better off replacing the system than repairing this one).
