Unknown Device Drivers - PCI Simple Communication Controller

Hi Folks

I am new here, looking for some knowledge around this frustrating PCI Simple Communication Controller unknown driver issue in one of our Dell Latitude 3180s, though not an important driver, yet driving me nuts and I like to have all drivers installed and no ? marks in device drivers.

I have installed all windows updates to a point that it tells me its up-to-date and no optional updates available. I have also installed the Intel Update Utility and it did not pick any new updates as well as Dell Update utility and that neither picked up any new updates.

Firmware is up to date.

I have also downloaded the Intel Management Engine and Intel Chipset and other bits directly from Intel as well as from Dell support page using the service tag/serial number and none helped. Either got installed fine and did not resolve this issue or said the platform is not compatible.

Here are the Hardware ID's:

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_5A9C&SUBSYS_07B21028&REV_0B
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_5A9C&SUBSYS_07B21028
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_5A9C&CC_078000
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_5A9C&CC_0780

and

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_5A9E&SUBSYS_00000000&REV_0B
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_5A9E&SUBSYS_00000000
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_5A9E&REV_0B
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_5A9E
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_5A9E&CC_78000
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_5A9E&CC_780

ChatGPT doesnt help much identifying exactly what these hardwars are or which drivers I need:

1. PCI

  • PCI stands for Peripheral Component Interconnect. This is a standard for connecting hardware components (e.g., network cards, sound cards, etc.) to a computer's motherboard.
  • This indicates that the device in question is connected via PCI or PCI Express.

2. VEN_8086

  • VEN_8086 refers to the vendor ID. In this case, 8086 is the vendor code for Intel. This tells us that the hardware device is manufactured by Intel.
  • The VEN prefix stands for Vendor.

3. DEV_5A9C

  • DEV_5A9C is the device ID. Each device from the vendor (in this case, Intel) has a unique code assigned to it by the vendor. The ID 5A9C represents a specific Intel device.
  • This corresponds to an Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) or Intel Active Management Technology (AMT) in some cases, though the exact device might require further reference to a specific Intel product list.

4. SUBSYS_07B21028

  • SUBSYS_07B21028 is the subsystem ID. It identifies the specific configuration or model of the device for a particular manufacturer or system integrator (in this case, Dell).
  • 07B2 is the subsystem vendor ID, which could be specific to Dell or another manufacturer. The 1028 is often the device model number used by the system integrator.
  • This can help identify if the device is part of a specific laptop or desktop model (e.g., Dell).

5. REV_0B

  • REV_0B is the revision ID of the device. This indicates the version or revision of the hardware. It helps to differentiate between different versions of the same device.
  • 0B here refers to the revision or update version of the Intel hardware.

6. CC_078000

  • CC_078000 represents the class code of the device, which is a classification code used by the PCI standard.
  • 0780 refers to a serial bus controller (specifically related to devices like PCI-to-PCI bridges or controllers) or management engines in some cases.

Summary of the Breakdown:

  • Vendor (VEN): Intel (8086)
  • Device (DEV): Intel device (5A9C) — could be part of Intel’s Management Engine or related to system management technologies.
  • Subsystem (SUBSYS): 07B21028 — likely a Dell-specific configuration for this device.
  • Revision (REV): 0B — revision 0B for this specific Intel hardware device.
  • Class Code (CC): 078000 — indicating a serial bus or system management-related device.

Second Hardware ID Example Breakdown:

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_5A9E&SUBSYS_00000000&REV_0B

This is quite similar but with a few different details:

  • VEN_8086: Again, Intel (8086).
  • DEV_5A9E: Another Intel device, identified by ID 5A9E.
  • SUBSYS_00000000: No specific subsystem ID, meaning it's not associated with a particular manufacturer or model configuration.
  • REV_0B: Revision 0B of the device.

This device might be another Intel system management or chipset-related device, potentially associated with a general-purpose configuration rather than a branded model.

Nothing seems to update these unknown drivers, not even updating driver via windows update.

Anyone expert on that? Unfortunately these devices are old and out of support so could not use our enterprise support with Dell.

Thanks

Bobby

Hi

This is either a Red Herring or a Dead End.....

https://catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=Windows+10%2C+Intel+system+management+engine&p=5

It returns over a thousand matches, but you may be able to reduce that with better search parameters?

Hi

No idea.

I put in W10 Intel System Management engine, but if you have some more specific search criteria, then excellent.

Otherwise just ignore it, as there may be nothing better than what you have already tried.

That's not going to work as I have tried original one from Intel's Website and a Dell one from Dell website specifically for this model and did not resolve the issue. Unless you had the same exact issue with the latest versions of Windows Updates since a few days ago (To-Date) and have resolved it that way, I doubt this is going to be a fix. The hardware may be incompatible with latest Intel Management System and might have to uninstall and roll-back to older versions but have tried that already and it says platform is not compatible meaning you most likely cannot use older versions since the Windows is updated with latest updates and patches. But thanks anyway.
