Update on XPS 13/15 2016 Developer Edition availability

Any news on the availability for any of the new XPS machines in a Developer Edition?

And do you know exactly what specifications will be used? I.e. 13? 15? Ram/screen/etc.?

Thanks, Phil.

Hey Barton, can you comment at all on the availability in the near future of additional config options? (eg. lesser CPU options)

Sorry for the misinformation, there will definitely be a dev edition xps 13 coming soon to Europe.

Stay tuned and thanks for the support!

Thank you Barton! That's a good start and I hope it's available in the next 1-2 weeks. Wouldn't mind seeing the detailed customizability of the outgoing XPS 13 where there are drop-down menus for selecting different display/SSD options. I understand the RAM/CPU is soldered on the board so limiting those config combinations is prudent, but different display/SSD options just screw on :)

Thanks to the Sputnik team, definitely buying one of these and not just wiping a windows version to show support (and save moolah).

Hey Barton, thanks for the info! Are the configurations that are live the extent of the high performance configurations?  To that end, I'm curious if there will be an i7 6560u/16g/512 w/ non touch display. Sorry if you've answered this already.

Hello Barton,

Can you please clarify your comment about depletion of stock? Ideally I'd like to compare all options and prices and decide which one I'd like to go with, but it seems like when i5 option(s) come out the i7s will no longer be in stock?

I'd like to get i5 with qhd and 16gb ram, or something as close to it as possible, hopefully saving a couple of hundred on i7 to i5 downgrade. But I don't know what options will be available, at what prices. Moreover, now your comment suggests that i7 might be out of stock by the time we find out.

Thank you.

It's certainly a valid argument that the i7's Iris graphics might be needed for the higher res screen, thus they don't sell it with the i5's HD graphics. Not sure if that's true or not.

One of the other Dell folks answered this in a different thread, but it's not easy to find. At that time it was said that essentially the i7 and touch screen are linked. Get one, get the other. They don't have as much say in the configuration options as they'd like to have.

Howdy,

we will be rolling out an i5 config. It will come with 8GB RAM, a 256GB SSD and FHD NT.  The timing of the i5 config is dependent on the depletion of the current inventory on hand.

thanks!

What about Europe? Any configurations fixed yet?

OK thanks that's interesting. I'm still unclear *what stock* needs to be depleted for the i5 to show up. The new i7s? Or the previous generation i5s?

On a side note (and unfortunately in either case), I can't justify spending $2K - $2.5K on 16GB RAM models with the i7 line w/large SSDs. From the Windows model pricing it looks like if the i5 qhd+ was offered with 16GB, the price would be around $1500 which is a lot more reasonable for me.

while it is called "developer edition", the selection of configurations is not really geared towards software devs. Has been that way in the Broadwell one, and at least what is known right now will be the same with the Skylake one.

It is more "Linux" or "Enthusiast" edition. (For a "real" Developer edition I'd expect maximum RAM and non-glare display as a valid combination for all CPU variants)

Hi Barton, any plans for XPS 13 developer edition availability in Australia?

Hi, I see that the Precision DE/Linux Edition is finally available in Switzerland. About to order it but I was wondering if the docking station that is sold with it (Dell Dock WD15 with 180-W-Adapter) is known to be compatible with Ubuntu. It would also be useful if the Dell USB to Ethernet and USB to HDMI are known to be compatible (and which particular model). that would be very useful!

Thanks!

Hi Alesfo,

I can answer the first question.  Unfortunately the docking station does NOT work with Ubuntu at this time.

thanks for your support!! :-)
