Optiplex 755 Memory upgrade

Hi,

I have Dell Optiplex 755 DT model. Currently installed with 4 GB (2 x 2GB modules). I would like to upgrade to 8 GB by adding another 2x 2GB memory modules.

1. Can someone tell the compatible memory modules available in the market? Also, does it matter if the old and new memory modules have different clock frequency (i.e. 667 Vs 800 Mhz).

Also, I hve 160GB HDD currently installed.

2. Can I also upgrade the HDD by adding an internal SSD Hard drive?

Thanks,

-Bala

Not positive, but I think the 755DT is basically the same case as my 780DT.  There is an empty 3.5" bay on most (unless you have a FD or media reader in it) but I have not been able to find a drive tray part number for this.  The main tray did not fit into this location.  So while you can technically have 2 hard drives, in mine I needed a different tray and it only supports 2 2.5" HDs.  I think you want the Dell F767D R494D Optiplex Precision 3.5" to 2.5" SSD Hard Drive Caddy Adapter.

You may want to save this manual if you do not have it.

Also if you just add a second SSD then this will defacto become your "data" drive (D:\).  You may want to reinstall your OS to this drive.  If you buy a SSD larger than your current drive, you can probably make a Windows Image Backup and then restore it to the new drive.  I would suggest saving the backup to an external drive and then REPLACING your primary drive with the new device on the same SATA cable.  After you get it running you can add the second drive back and reformat it, but it may need to sit loose in the 3" bay (try velcro).

Note that you may loose the functionality of the hidden Recovery partition if one exists when you reformat..    You may also want to make sure you have made any recovery media that your install supports before moving drives around.

You may also need to get a SATA splitter cable for the Power (1 in 2 out) and a second SATA data cable.  While my MOBO has the SATA data connector, it did not have the extra power connector

Regarding memory, your speed is limited by the slowest set in the PC.  I would pull the memory and verify the exact vendor and part info and try to match it, but realistically it will not make much of a difference.  I would not pay more than a couple of bucks premium to get the exact match.  Doubling the memory even at a slower speed will be of a greater benefit.  You do need to match the voltage exactly.  Also read up on pagefile.sys and make sure that this file is on the SSD with at least 1.5 x the total memory.  BTW, some will tell you the page file will wear your drive faster, technically correct, practically irrelevant.
