VMware and NetWorker
Hello,
I have a question concerning VMware backups using NetWorker and vStorage API. We have to install a huge environment at the customer (13 Backup-Server and Storagenodes) and they are very interested in VMware image backups using vStorage API, but still be able to restore single files. In my opinion when only backing up a VMware-Snapshot full once a week and incrementals during the week using Change Block Tracking, I´m able to restore at single file level, but can only restore the image from the full (and this is proberly very old and perhaps Service Packs were installed in between). Is this right and do you know if there is a better solution planned ? That I will also be able to restore Images form the full and CBT incrementals ?
Thank you in advance and best Regards, Daniel

By design that is a limitation of doing VADP backups

Yes - and that the image comes only from the full backup is noted in this integration guide: http://powerlink.emc.com/km/live1/en_US/Offering_Technical/Technical_Documentation/300-011-693.pdf
The EMC Avamar solution has the ability to restore image from its CBT backups but that comes as a byproduct of their unique ability to do "daily virtual fulls" from any/all data backed up.
As to being able to do that in the future w/ NetWorker, at this time I can't really comment on it as that is all work TBD.
