Transceiver compatibility between S4048-ON and WAN uplink
Hello,
Our WAN vendor is going to be upgrading their edge switch and installing a 100GbE transceiver with port speed set at 40Gb, which is what the S4048 can accommodate.
Question is, do the rated transceiver speeds need to match? Meaning, should the two transceivers both be 40GbE? Of course the mode and wavelength need to be the same. Normally we pair them so they match, but were told that it doesn't matter as long as the S4048 has a Dell qualified 40GbE SFP+ and set to auto negotiate.
Thanks in advance for clarifying.

Hi,
They shouldn’t need to match as long as they are the same wavelength type, but we haven’t validated every possibility.

Hi Tadman23,
our switches do not perform a negotiation on speed if optics are used as they normally only support a specific speed and ethernet standard (we do not support multi-rate optics in our switches).
These are the supported 40G QSFP+ transceivers in our S4048s and your provider should support the matching standard with their optics:

Thank you both for your responses!

Resurrecting this discussion since this project was delayed and is now moving forward with a slight change.
Same scenario except the vendor is setting their speed to 20G instead of 40G. If our S4048 does not auto negotiate to 20G on the 40G QSPF+ port, what are our options? LAG two 10G ports?
Thanks
