The modem on my Inspiron 1000 got fried in a thunder storm and I had to buy  an external modem with USB connection to get me going again.

 

Problem is, I can't get rid of the software for the installed Agere modem, it keeps appearing when the computer is switched on and I've got to fiddle about with the hardware of the new external modem which is a Zoom with USB connection to get it to work.

 

I'm not very computer technically knowledgeable, so be gentle with any info please.
