Dell Optiplex 7010 SFF CPU Cooler
Recently I bought a Dell Optiplex 7010 SFF Motherboard and i3-3240 in hopes of making a little gaming pc to run a few light games, however to my disappointment I have realised that I may not be able to mount a standard intel stock/aftermarket cooler on it. Is this true? or am I able to just put any LGA1155 Cooler on it? (I don't have a SFF case, so I wont have trouble with the cooler being too tall ect.

The Dell OEM cooler for 7010 SFF is low profile proprietary for that case, but the motherboard itself has standard non tapped holes around cpu socket for heatsink mounting. You can mount any LGA 1155 cooler on this motherboard in a new case as long as the cooler has its own back plate. If you use a standard screw mounted LGA115x Dell OEM cooler such as the one in optiplex 790 MT, it has no back plate so you need to get a separate back plate for the heatsink to screw onto. If you use for example Cooler Master hyper 212 evo, it comes with its own back plate.

If your SFF motherboard includes a silver heatsink backplate already as shown in this link

then you are all set to use a standard screw mounted LGA1155 heatsink fan assembly.

I know it was quarter of the year already, but I have to write it.
With this backplate you cannot use nonDell cooler. Screw holes are smaller than the one used in standard coolers.
If someone wants to use any other cooler than original one than there has to be not only backplate changed, but also CPU bracket, as it is kept in place by the backplate. Any bracket for lga1150/1155 will be fine. I used one from broken ASRock board.
