iDRAC 7/8 cannot download firmware updates via LifeCycle (LCC) using online catalog

Thank in advance to everyone who works hard contributing to the Dell community forums.

My Dell R730 cannot download firmware updates via lifecycle controller. Catalog downloads fine, but updates won't download. Upgrade BIOS manually to latest (2.9.1) and iDRAC (2.60.xxxxx) same issue. Tried ftp.dell.com downloads.dell.com via FTP and HTTP. Confirmed with firewall that all traffic is reaching internet without issue. Most likely submitting a ticket with Dell tomorrow.

Based on the forum posts listed below, this appears to be a problem on Dell's side related to some type of FTP to HTTPS transition and download server name transition.  It seems to be like a botched transition where Dell has broken backwards compatibility and they may not be able to get out of this without re-enabling the older update services or forcing all customers to apply a corrected LifeCycle controller firmware (that does not exist yet) manually.

A colleague and I have spent most of the day trying to fix this on a single server. I need to update four servers. Dell does not seem to value my time.

What is Dell's official solution to this issue and why is it not a pinned post in these forums?

To upgrade the LCC firmware, use Dell Repository Manager (Data Center version) to create a repository with just the LCC update and then publish it via a FTP server (I use a custom IIS FTP site on the DRM server).  Then point the installed LCC to your FTP server and it will upgrade only the LCC firmware.  After reboot use the new LCC firmware to upgrade the remaining components from the HTTPS site.

Just used this on two R630 servers and it works well.  DRM can also be used to upgrade any older PE server firmware.  I have a couple of R610's which I've upgraded in this way.

My Question is...

How does Dell expect it's customers to update the LLC?

So if you have a Datacenter full of servers.... what is the exact process Dell is outlining to accomplish this?

Dell has made it clear that if you are referring to a server hardware generation other then the latest, that you will have to update using a non-internet method (USB, DVD, SMB, private HTTP, private FTP), since they broke the online method and have intention of bring the old services back online. One we update via one of those methods, then we can once again update online.

Dell has handled this transition very badly.

What are you guys still raging about?  Look up a few posts, update your LCC/iDRAC to the latest version and it'll work again JFC

Agreed, I was **bleep** too, when it happened.  The updated firmware came out a month ago to resolve it and is posted in this very thread to update along with other separate threads.  That's why I don't understand why new replies keeping getting posted like it hasn't.  I too was bit by this, luckily we run Cisco UCS in our datacenter, partly because of stuff like this.  I wouldn't be happy in a large scale either but again, it's been out for a month.  I throw up a little in my mouth every time the possibility of switching platforms.

Upset, yes. "Raging", no.

Why upset?  Two reasons:

1) Yes, there is a fix in version 2.63.60.61, but it caused our LCC to go into recovery mode.

2) Even if there is a stable fix, it requires manual steps to apply it. Some customers who use the internet update method for all their servers will have to invest man power to apply it. Thus my comment about the transition being handled poorly.

P.S. I was not aware of version 2.63.60.62 until this very moment.  Is that the version your are talking about?  I will have my team test with that version. Thanks for commenting.

I am facing the same problem here too with my PE 730, is there any workaround?

Hello,

If you upgrade IDRAC to 2.63xxx manually, you will be able to launch the other updates automatically.

tested today

Just worked with support on this and can confirm that you have to be 2.63.xx.xx to get the HTTPS option for network share. Manually updated the LCC to 2.63.60.61 with no issues and was able to pull the latest updates down.

I have this issue on a T420 and I'm trying to figure out how to update my iDRAC LCC to a supported version.  How do I "manually" update this?

I downloaded and installed Repository Manager 3.2, which I've never used before.  I created a blank repository and added a bundle for the T420 iDRAC with LCC firmware v2.63.60.62.  I see the update file in the store.

This is where I'm stuck.  How do I present this so Lifecycle Controller on the server can access it?

Update: I read that again after getting back from vacation. I think it just means my server is up to date.

Using an idrac 7 on a poweredge r420 and still having trouble on version 2.63.60.62.

SUP029: Firmware versions on server match catalog, applicable updates are not present in the repository.

I have been skimming this thread today because I have fired up a T420 that has been turned off for a year or two.

Am I right if I understand the thread like this: I have to install a Windows OS on this vSphere server in order to update the firmware? Remember: it is just this one server, I have to deal with. Not really an option to begin installing some Dell Update Server or whatever they call it.

Hi,

Have you check the URL provided for the catalog?

Is this server need credential to pass the proxy?

As a workaround could you download the file locally (Windows 32bits binary file) and appling it through the web IDRAC interface?

Best regards,

As noted above, there is a catch 22 when trying to update firmware w/o an OS installed.

Using a Windows 10 Pro desktop (192.168.1.10) with a share: SERVERBAK

Permissions on share: everyone \ Full permissions

Create a local user with a password, e.g.: someone

Tested on:

Dell PowerEdge R630, LCC ver: 2.70.70.70, A00

Network cable on NIC1 and iDRAC.  Both set to DHCP.

From Dell support website, Download

iDRAC-with-Lifecycle-Controller_Firmware_DPV0R_WN32_2.75.100.75_A00.EXE

Copy to \\192.168.1.10\SERVERBAK

rename to idrac.exe

In Lifecycle Controller, Firmware Update
Network Share
CFS
Share Name/Address: \\192.168.1.10\SERVERBAK
Domain and Username: someone
password:
File Path or Update Package path:
idrac.exe

This will update the LCC.  From then on, all other firmware updated via FTP, using ftp.dell.com

Enjoy!
