Dell PowerVault NAS Solution
My goal is to create a NAS server for my home that I can back up everything to and then back up to the cloud. I know there are pre made NAS solutions but I want to build my own. Right now I'm looking at the PowerVaults, but Im new to the mass storage servers. The Red drives from WD also look like a nice option to fill it with once I get a chassis. Are there any better options out there, want to keep it sub $500 USD.
Just realized that the PowerVault was DAS, Im looking for more of a iSCSI type of server.

Hello, at this point, I think our community will share their ideas. Unfortunately, I cannot suggest a direct configuration myself. You can contact the phone support of your region for support and buy such as initial configuration. Other than that, I would suggest you take a look at this page. https://dell.to/3Nmd9AR you will find information about Dell EMC storage products. I just want to remind you and be aware that if you are going to acquire an enterprise product, be careful to use certified drives for that product(I beleive any vendor need that). Non-certified parts may not work or cause other problems.
Hope that helps!

Powervault is the name of a group of products rather an a special product. It goes from Tape, (old) NAS, external (RAID) Storages or simple JBODs.
The external RAID Storage like the MD3 only supports original Dell drives which needs to support the MD3. The PowerVault MD3 supports iSCSI, FibreChannel or SAS depends on the controller it has. So it presents Blockstorage and not File... its a Hardware SAN.
To make it short....i suggest to buy a used general purpose Server like a Dell PowerEdge R5x0 or 7x0 with 12x3.5" or 24x2.5" slots. A Perc H7xx can work with non Dell drives with some luck.
If more drives or capacity is needed you can add a H8xx Raid HBA with external SAS Ports and attach a MD1200/1400 JBOD to it.
You can install TrueNAS, Open-E or similar linux based distro on that Server.
