R420 embedded video inactive

Hello,

Faced a problem. We tried to conduct an experiment - run the video card nvidia geforce 210 in the server R420 and it worked)
The built-in video controller was turned off. After that, turning it back on was not possible.

The built-in video controller is enabled, but does not work and it became impossible to enable / disable it. The option is not active.

We tried to update the BIOS. No result. Could the built-in video controller fail after such tricks?

Good morning,

As I understand, installing a video card is going to force the embedded video controller to be unavailable and is by design. This also causes the iDRAC's virtual console to no longer work, because video isn't being sent through it. I would test by removing the GeForce card and testing again, unless you were saying that you guys had removed the card as part of your testing process. Please let me know if you see any behavioral changes with the card removed.

We took out the discrete card, rebooted the server and updated the BIOS, but the built-in controller did not work. Does this mean that the built-in video controller has been disabled forever? The console iDRAK works and transmits video. No video output from server to local monitor.

Hi,

no, it should work. After removing the discrete card it should switch back to internal graphic.

You may clear the NV RAM, here's a graphic that shows the jumper settings:

After resetting the NVRAM, please ensure that the setting in BIOS got switched to enabled.

[F2] BIOS --> Integrated Devices --> Embedded Video Controller: Enabled

If this is set, you will see an output via the onboard graphic. Please ensure that the connected display is working elsewhere.

Best regards,
Stefan

Hi,

that the option is grayed out is normal, but what does it show there is it set to enabled or disabled?

If it is set to enabled - it automatically switched back after uninstalling the video card.

Now, is it the same behavior on both video outputs front and back?

Have you ever seen that this is working? SO did it work before you started your experiment?

Thanks for answering.

Best regards

Stefan

The option is enabled!

If it is set to enabled - it automatically switched back after uninstalling the video card.

after removing the discrete video card, it switched to enabled automatically, before experiment i switched it to disable manually

Both video outputs - front and back no work!

Have you ever seen that this is working? SO did it work before you started your experiment?

Yes, before start experiment, its work

It did NOT help, the reset was done, but the option to enable / disable the embedded video controller is still highlighted in gray. An interesting fact - when connecting a local monitor to the VGA port, monitor itself does not power off and don't sleep - he is act but it has a stably black screen, while through the console I see that the OS has booted.
We tried to connect different monitors

Hi,

just to confirm, you did the NVRAM clear like this:

1. Shutdown the system.

2. Set the jumper to clear.

3. Power on the system and wait till you see a message, that the NVRAM was cleared (on-screen).

4. Power off the system and switch back the jumper to default.

5. Power on the system.

You can also reset the BIOS settings via Lifecycle Controller under Retire / Repurpose.

I can't imagine that the discrete card destroyed the internal graphic somehow, so I hope the NVRAM clear / BIOS reset will help.

Best regards

Stefan
