HDD issues

My Dell Inspiron 1545 hard drive failed so I purchased a 160gb Toshiba drive for it, when it came to reinstalling Vista from the disk suppled everything worked fine until it asked where to store Vista as it didn't pick up the hard drive. Now reading a few posts is it right I need a SATA RAID driver like the one in the link below:

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=21730&ProductFamily=Software+Products&ProductLine=Chipset+Software&ProductProduct=Intel%c2%ae+Rapid+Storage+Technology+(Intel%c2%ae+RST)&lang=eng#help

Many thanks.

Right, ordered a new WD scorpio black (160gb) hard drive, put it in and was picked up straight away, so Vista is up and running plus drivers I needed to install. Hopefully windows updates will start updating things as well. I will see if there are any updates/downloads on Dell site also. One last thing the scorpio black spins at 7200rpm compared to my old one 5400rpm, will my drive operate at the quicker speed or will it be limited to 5400rpm.

Thanks again for your advice.

Hi Marcus,

You are correct. You seem to need the RAID driver for the installation routine to see your hard drive. Please click the link below to Natakuc's clean install guide. I suggest you download the full PDF and scroll down to page 128 where he describes how to locate and use them during the installation process.

Thanks Osprey for the reply, I have downloaded the driver to my USB stick and put it in the computer when prompted at the install driver screen. It finds a driver:

Intel(R) ICH9m-E/M SATA AHCI CONTROLLER (D:\x64\R197861\F6FLP32\IAAHCI.INF)

Now checking on my drivers and utilities disk supplied I have also found a driver same as above but ending

(E:\f6flpy-x86\iaACHI.inf)

When I install either it still reads No drives were found.

Ok, just so I don't get ahead of myself, do you see the new drive in your BIOS?

Okay I am no expert so I will try and explain what I have done so far. Like I said the hard drive packed in so I bought a factory refurbished 160gb drive (from PC world), took my old 250gb Western Digital out and put the new one in. Put the Vista Dell re-installation disk into drive and booted from there until screen with no hard drive detected.

In answer to your question I have just gone into set up (f2) under system where it gives you processor speeds clock speeds etc it says hard drive None. I took the laptop to work with me today and the computer guy connected my new hard drive to a PC (opened the cover of PC and connected a cable from HDD to somewhere inside PC) he said that that computers BIOS did not see the hard drive also. If I start my computer up and just leave it to run it says no hard drive detected reseat hard drive, if i put the old Western Digital HD back in it picks it up but does nothing as it is knackered. There is a click coming from the hard drive which is a bit like a clock tic tocking so it must be getting power, the only thing the computer guy said is that the HDD may be faulty, but I don't know.

Ok, if the BIOS doesn't see the new drive, then it's a fool's errand trying to install the OS. Assuming you've followed the hard drive replacement procedure properly, I suspect the 160GB drive is faulty.

Thanks for you help osprey, like you I have come to the conclusion that it is faulty, I have tried everything in Natakuc's link and installed drivers but it still doesn't show up. I will send it back and will buy a brand new one instead. I will keep you posted on my outcome when it is installed.

The drive will work at the faster speed. It's not a huge deal but you might notice some performance improvement.

Glad to hear you're up and running!

As you have a Dell warranty, you need to contact Dell's Technical Support, about replacing the hard drive.

I have an issue with my Hard Drive (Dell Inspiron 620) as well, I bought the computer 7 month ago. Bios does see the drive but I can do nothing further, I hear the drive is spinning around constantly...Can anybody tell me how can I RMA the hard drive?

Thank in advance.

Unfortunately the DCF is not a substitute for Dell's Technical Support, that you need to contact for warranty parts replacement.

Besides calling, you can use either eMail, Online Chat, Twitter to contact Technical Support.

When calling, did you use 1.877.293.1197, also you need have your system's Express Service Code handy.

I will try to have a Dell Liaison contact you here, about this.
