Dell can, if  you call and verify ownership, help you remove the BIOS password for the drive.  That won't touch the password on the drive, however - if you don't need the data on the drive, cheapest course of action is to replace the drive once you've removed the BIOS password.  If you do need the data on the drive, you're going to need to contact a data recovery company that can remove the password - it can't be removed by an end user.

The only way to have this remedied, is to call Dell, pay the service charge and prove ownership to obtain an override password.

The password is stored in a flash EEPROM on the motherboard, you could replace both the motherboard and hard drive.

You will need to call Dell with verification of ownership to have the BIOS portion removed.

The password on the hard drive can be removed only with specialist tools - if you don't need the data on the drive, it'll be cheaper to simply replace the drive with a new one.  If you do need the data, you're in for a bill of at least a couple of hundred dollars to have the password removed and the data unlocked;  contact a data recovery service for that.

You can clear the CMOS portion from the mainboard with the recovery jumper on the board (see the service manual) but this WILL NOT remove the password from the drive itself.  If you've lost that, and don't need the data, clear the CMOS part and replace the drive.

If you DO need the data, you'll need to send the drive out to a recovery service that can remove the password for you.  Since this will likely cost at least 2-3 times what a new drive would, it's cheaper to replace the drive.

DO NOT plug in a new drive without clearing the CMOS password or the drive will inherit the password.

I had predicted hard drive failure on a Dell Inspiron N4010 with WD Scorpio Blue HD.
Bought TrueImage14 cloning software and tried to clone
but had old hard drive in Dell Inspiron N4010 laptop.  TrueImage14 told me new hard drive
had to be installed in laptop to be destination drive,so I had a Dell contract tech install
new hard drive in laptop.

I had a hard drive password on the old hard drive I forgot to remove before drive was taken out of laptop. I know the hard drive password.

Tried GetData's RecoverMyFiles data recovery software but no partitions, folders, files found.                                                                                                            In Computer Management when connected to hard drive dock or HDD enclosure,                                                                                                                         the old hard drive says Unformatted and Unitiated but it  is formatted and initiated.

I ran a DataLifeGuard Diagnostics for Windows and got a screen with all
the results but with no way to copy it.
This is what I wrote down:
" Quick Test on drive2 did not complete. Status Code=04
(Unknown failed test element ) = 96 (Unkown test)
SMART self-test did not complete on drive 2.
Model Number WDC WD3200BPVT -75ZESTO/WSB
Serial Number WD-WXXXXXXXXXX
Failure on  Reallocated Sector Count : ID 5,  Value 140 ,Threshold  140,  Worst  140, Warranty 1
All the other parameters seemed to have passed.
Is having the hard drive password causing the problem of not being able to detect the partition?
Does the password encrypt the drive ? I own Victoria for Windows and
DM Disk Editor and Data Recovery Software. I am thinking of
using Victoria for Windows to delete the hard drive password.

I am experiencing now exactly the same problem as goreabhay13 - with my Dell Inspiron N5110.
I have a service tag number and a HDD serial showing on a log in screen - prompting me to enter my HDD pasword!
I have never locked my Bios with a password nor have I ever put a HDD password in place.
Can someone help?
Dell Kiran K?

Thanks.
