Is this a brand new external drive? Have you been able to transfer any files to it yet? New hard drives have to be formatted before they can be used. When you are in Windows Explorer, does the drive appear there? If you see it there, pick a file on your HD that you want to transfer, left click to highlight it and drag it to the external drive. If it doesn't work, post back.

When you say that your computer sees the new drive, I assume you mean it appears in Windows Explorer with a letter such as D or E. Right click the drive and look at the menu that appears. Choose format by left clicking on it, and a popup box will appear. Click the start button to format the drive. When that is done, disconnect your external drive, restart your computer and plug the new drive back in. Hopefully it will work now.

If you want to save your settings as well as files, you can use the XP Files and Settings Transfer (FAST) wizard to create an image of them and save to cd or other removable media.  This is a good guide to using the FAST wizard. Just be sure you have an up-to-date antivirus before you re-instate them!
