"Successful Application Reconfiguration" and SupportAssist

Every day several times a day, I see "Successful Application Reconfiguration"s in the Reliability Monitor for all of my Windows 10/Pro apps.  These informational events can number up to 1300 of them in a day, depending on how many times this set of events is triggered.  It all has to do with the operation of SupportAssist.  If SupportAsssist is not installed, these events do not occur.  But, when they do occur because SupportAssist is installed, it reduces the Reliability Monitor Stability Index to 1 and decreases performance.  There is some kind of incompatability between SupportAssist and other actions of Windows 10 that is causing these Reconfiguration events to occur.  It is not normal behavior (although a Dell agent tried to convince me that it is).  There is something about SupportAssist that causes this problem.  The SupportAssist Team needs to investigate it.  I do not want to solve the problem by uninstalling SupportAssist.  I want the Dell SupportAssist team to solve this problem by fixing SupportAssist so that it does not cause a "Successful Application Reconfiguration" event.

See https://www.dell.com/community/SupportAssist-for-PCs/XPS-8930-SupportAssist-and-Reliability-Monitor/m-p/7310226#M87983 for a report that uninstalling SupportAssist solves the problem.

@DELLKaren Thanks. Do you know if that is possible @lmacri ? For me the plugin is the issue, so when that is not installed the "Successful Application Reconfiguratio" dont happen.

I may try to uninstall the plugin ones more and install a older version and see if that will have any effect or if it just gets updated to the problematic version soon after...

Hi ThomasAAT:

I have an Inspiron 5584 laptop and I seem to recall that DELLKaren has an Inspiron 7569 2-in-1 laptop. I looked at the support page <here> for your Alienware 17 R3 and I see Dell Update/Alienware Update and Alienware Command Center 4.5 Application listed as available programs but there is no Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update listed there (a search for the keyword "plugin" returns 0 results). I think you've said that you don't have a program called Dell SupportAssist Remediation listed at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features and that there is no Dell SupportAssist Remediation service listed at Start | Windows Administrative Tools | Services (which seems odd to me), so I'm not even sure if the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.1.14954 that DELLKaren and I have is even recommended for your Alienware 17 R3. That's something you might have to ask Dell customer support or ask other Alienware users in the Alienware board of this forum.

Here's how I control Dell SupportAssist (DSA) updating on my own Inspiron 5584.

I don't know if the new DSA v3.9.1.234 works the same way as previous versions on my Inspiron 5584, but I have automatic update checks and optimization scans turned off in my DSA settings [Options (gear icon) | Settings | Automate Scans and Optimizations | Scan Your System and Drivers At: | DISABLED]. When I launch DSA it runs a self-update check and will download an update for the DSA program if one is detected, but no other updates are installed automatically. For example, if I run a manual "Get Drivers & Downloads" check (or click the blue Run All button) on the Home tab and one or more available updates is found, I am presented with a list of available updates after I choose "Update", and I can uncheck any updates I don't want to install.

DSA v3_9_0_234 Settings Automate Scans and Optimizations Disabled 08 May 2021.png

In theory, if I uninstall a program from Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features and it is re-offered by DSA I should be able to prevent its re-installation by unchecking it before clicking the "Install" button. For example, if Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update v5.4.1.14954 or the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.1.14954 (which can also update the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update on my Inspiron 5584) was offered I could simply decline it by unchecking the box before clicking "Install".  Here's an image I captured on 24-Apr-2021:

Dell SupoortAssist v3_8_1_23 One Update Found DSA OS Recovery Plugin EDITED 24 Apr 2021.png

If I launch DSA and it still has pending updates that I don't want to install I can refresh the list of available updates by choosing "Run All" on the Home tab.

@lmacri Thanks for taking your time to look into my problem. I have also done some more digging and found the same as you, my AW17R3 do not have this plugin listed undre compatible programs and therefore not necessary or supported on my system. So why supportassis install it automatically is a mystery. But I it seems I have manage to solve the problem. This is what I did.

  1. I uninstalled Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update from Programs and features and restarted.
  2. I then look into the Dell folder inside the Programfiles folder and found the folder for SupportAssistAgent. Inside this folder was the OSRecoveryPlugin forlder contaning the problematic DellUpdateSupportAssistPlugin.exe file.
  3. plugin.jpg
  4. Still after the uninstalling the plugin. So that's what have triggered the auto update I belive. So I renamed the folder with the DellUpdateSupportAssistPlugin.exe and removed it to a external HD.
  5. pluginfolder.jpg
  6. After doing this the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update has yet to be automatic installed on my system. And the "Successful Application Reconfiguration" has stopped. I have tested with several reboots.
  7. The original folder where the plugin was placed looks like this now after I removed it to my external HD

Hi ThomasAAT:

That might have stopped the flood of "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events in your Win 10 Reliability Monitor, but do you know what other effects manually removing the DellUpdateSupportAssistPlugin.exe file might have?

I disabled my Dell SupportAssist Remediation service at Start | Windows Administrative Tools | Services yesterday (07-May-2021) for another test.  This has stopped the flood of "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events but when I checked the hidden C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\ folder today with TreeSize Free I could see that all the system snapshots created by System Repair have been wiped off my hard drive. Here's an older image of my System Repair snapshots captured on 03-May-2021 showing that the C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\Snapshots folder was using 20GB of disk space (92,594 files in 20 folders)...

TreeSize v4_2_2 Program Data Dell SystemRepair Snapshots DSA Remediation Service Enabled EDITED 03 May 2021.png

... and here's an image of the same folder captured today on 08-May-201 that shows my Dell System Repair snapshots were wiped and the size of my C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\Snapshots folder dropped to 9.5 KB (2 files in 2 folders) after my Dell SupportAssist Remediation service was disabled.

Has something similar happened on your system since you removed the DellUpdateSupportAssistPlugin.exe file, and if so do you have an alternate plan in place if your system files are corrupted and you need to perform an emergency recovery? Seeing this flood of 192 "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events logged in my Win 10 Reliability Monitor about 30 min after each boot-up is annoying but I'm not sure it does any harm, other than causing my cooling fan to run at high speed for a minute or so.

I have never clicked on "Run All".  I have always thought that this would initiate all of the options on the screen (Get drivers & downloads, Scan hardware, Clean files, Tune performance, Optimize network).  I never want my files cleaned, because this cleans the Recycle bin, and I don't want that. So, I always click on "Update" under "Get drivers & downloads" (if there is an update available), or I click on "Get drivers & downloads" if I want it to do a scan to check for updates.  Occasionally, I will click on "Scan hardware", but I never click on the other options.  Right now there is no date under 'Scan hardware' because I manually re-installed DSA recently.Get D&D - Update.JPG

@lmacri thanks for making me aware of possible side effects. I dont have Dell SupportAssist Remediation or systemtemrepair installed on my system. Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update is not needed as I not use it and can safely uninstall it. This method have stopped it to auto install again. The alternative was to uninstall both the plugin and support assist to get rid of the flod of "Successful Application Reconfiguration". That have been the "fix" for several users with the same problem. But I want to keep SA so this alow that.

I dont have the system repair option enabled or listed in support assist. In my hidden folder it looks like this:

Skjermbilde 2021-05-09 071251.jpg

Just a side note; I have also just removed the folder so I can just change the name of the folder back to how it was and place it in its original place. And Support Assist is working as normal without any issues after uninstalling the plugin and removed the folder. As expected since dont have Dell OS Recovery Tool or systemrepair installed.

For recovery I have just used MS own Recovery options in Windows 10

I have also prefomed the comands with came back with no errors:

sfc /scannow

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Hi DELLKaren:

As I general rule I don't like clicking "Run All" in Dell SupportAssist (DSA) for all the reasons you mentioned, and that's why I've disabled all automated DSA update checks and optimizations (Settings | Automate Scans and Optimizations | Scan Your System and Drivers at: | DISABLED). On rare occasions I will bite the bullet and click "Run All" in DSA if I am troubleshooting a problem (e.g. if DSA is repeatedly failing to install an update for the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools) and I want to ensure I'm performing a fresh scan for available updates. In fact, I prefer using Dell Update over DSA for installing Dell software updates, but Dell Update is so tightly integrated with DSA these days that any problem with software updating in DSA will usually bleed over to Dell Update.

And as I mentioned in my 05-May-2021 post <here>, I use Macrium Reflect Free imaging software to create rescue media and the occasional full disk image of my system, and I've also enabled Windows System Restore (which is disabled by default in Win 10) as instructed in the Windows Central article How to Use System Restore on Windows 10. This means that I can perform an emergency recovery if my system files are corrupted and my system can't be booted up even if Dell's System Repair isn't running on my system. I just want to be sure that anyone following this thread is aware that trying our suggested workarounds to stop the flood of "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events in their Win 10 Reliability Monitor (e.g., disabling the Dell SupportAssist Remediation service or removing the DellUpdateSupportAssistPlugin.exe file) could have unexpected consequences if those workarounds are used as a long-term solution.

@lmacri just a follow-up on my last reply.

I have never get offered the recovery plugin in DSA or in Dell update. Not even after it was uninstalled. That means that my system dont support it. Makes sense since it's not listed under drivers for my AW17R3. I am quite sure that by uninstalling and removing the folder (preventing it to reinstall automatically) will do no harm. DSA works flawlesly without it.

Some screenshot that shows the Dell software installed on my PC. As you can see I dont have Dell SupportAssist Remediation installed.

dell programs.jpg

And systemrestore is not active in DSA:

no systemrestore.jpg

I dont have the system recovery option in my BIOS so after what I understand my AW17R3 never came with that option or is designed to work with system recovery.

Glad to have got rid of the flooding of "Successful Application Reconfiguration" and still be able to keep DSA. Hope it stays that way.

HI DELLKaren:

Just a warning that clicking "Run All" will indeed run all scans on the Home tab, including Hardware Scan, Clean Files, Tune Performance, etc. regardless of whether the DSA option at Settings | Automate Scans and Optimizations | Scan Your System and Drivers is enabled or disabled.  Sorry if my previous comments caused any confusion.

Your images are still in moderation and I can't see them yet so I'll have to post back later about your other questions.

An oddity going on with the System Repair Setting:

Today May 9,  I noticed something strange with DSA | Settings | System Repair.  I get this on both my 5482 and my 7569 (I keep all of the settings the same on the two machines).  I know that I have always had System Repair set to “ON,” and since May 6 mid-day, I’ve had the Dell SupportAssist Remediation services disabled

Here is the confirmation for the disablement.

The last time I ,The last time I opened this setting (see my May 7 9:48 AM note), it said “System Repair: ON” and there were radio buttons to set the size of the backup space.  Since YOU have “System Repair “OFF” and Remediation Services disabled, for YOU, what appears at Settings | System Repair when you (try to) open it up?

About the wiping out of backup files:

With TreeSize Free, I’ve just checked C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair.  This is how it looks today and it looked the same way yesterday May 8.  The red squares are #1620311728 entries that were added after I made the same screenshot on May 5.

So, given the screenshot above, even though I disabled Dell SupportAssist Remediation Services (Adminstrative Tools | Services | Dell SupportAssist Remediation) on May 6 at 11:41 AM (System Event: 7040) but had System Repair “ON”, there were backups on on May 5, as well as May 6.  In other words, nothing was wiped out – May 5 files are still there (this was when I re-installed DSA) and May 6 files are there (this was when I disabled Dell SupportAssist Remediation Services).   Unfortunately, there is no time-stamp on the files in TreeSize Free, so I don’t know if the May 6 files were created before or after the disablement.  I suspect that they were created before.  And I suspect that this is why I am seeing no more files after May 6 and why the DSA Settings | System Repair message  (red box) appears.  I don’t really know what it means by “Try again later”.   It sounds like something is going to happen by itself later on.  But, I am going to enable SupportAssist Remediation Services and see what DSA Settings | System Repair says then.  It should still say “ON” because that is what it has always been.

You say on May 8 8:59 PM that after disabling Dell SupportAssist Remediation Services the day before (May 7) that all the system snapshots created by System Repair have been wiped off your hard drive. However, on May 6 12:09 PM you said that even though you had System Repair turned off and you expected all the files and subfolders in C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\Snapshots to be purged when you disabled System Repair, they were not purged.  So, is there a time lapse between turning off System Repair and file purging??    Or a time lapse between disabling Dell SupportAssist Remediation Services and the file purging??  (I say it both ways because I am not sure whether it’s the “Turning off” of System Repair that causes the purging or whether it’s the “disablement” of Dell SupportAssist Remediation Service that causes the purging?  Or maybe both will cause it to happen??) It looks to me that it might be the “disablement” that causes the purging, because I’ve always had System Repair turned on and nothing has been purged – the only thing that has happened is that the backing up stopped after May 6..  And it also looks like there is a time lapse between the “disablement” and the fact that System Repair, being turned “on”,  gives you the “try later” message.

Sorry for the jumbled up formatting here in two places.  I had put captions on the first two images and that was forcing the next line to be misaligned.  (It's supposed to be flush with the left margin).  It took me a long time to figure out that captions on the images were causing this, and by that time, I had no more editing time left!!

@DELLKaren Looks to be correct. For me the "Successful Application Reconfiguration" was triggered by the service "Dell Hardware Support" when "Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update" was installed. After I uninstalled the plugin, the same service dont triggers the "Successful Application Reconfiguration".

Services.jpg

Skjermbilde 2021-05-09 224305.jpg

And as it turns out Alienware 17R3 is not listed under compatible systems for this plugin.

So glad I figured that out and uninstalled it.

I am trying to assemble some logic about all of this.  So far this is what I've come up with, assuming that a device supports Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update, SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools, and Dell SupportAssist Remediation:

Relationships among

  • DSA,
  • Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update,
  • SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools, and
  • Dell SupportAssist Remediation

1.  Whenever a new version of DSA is installed (automatic or manual installation), there is also a new version of Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update.  However, a new version of SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update may be installed independently at a later date and then the install dates of the two are not the same.

2.  Whenever a new version of SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools gets installed, there is a new version of Dell SupportAssist Remediation.

General Principle as to when the flood of "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events occurs:

  • It occurs when Dell System Repair/Dell SupportAssist Remediation creates a new backup

Relationship between Dell System Repair and Dell SupportAssist

Remediation:

  • If DSA System Repair is OFF, then Dell SupportAssist Remediation Services is automatically disabled and then System Repair/Dell SupportAssist Remediation does not create new backups and you don’t get the flood of “Successful Application Reconfiguration" events in the Reliability Monitor. The Startup Type for Dell SupportAssist Remediation Services automatically changes from "Automatic (Delayed Start)" to "Disabled" when System Repair is turned off.

  • If DSA System Repair is “ON” but the Dell SupportAssist Remediation Service is disabled, the DSA System Repair button doesn’t work.  No new backups are created and so you don’t get the flood of "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events.

This is a working document.  If it needs modifications, then chime in.

Indeed.  I wasn't going to take a change and test it.  You don't have any choice as to what files will be cleaned; it's all or none. I like to keep my Recycle bin intact.  My Anti-Virus Program (McAfee) gives me a choice of the files it should clean and so I use it instead.

Hi DELLKaren:

Here are my test results from 09-May-2021 with Dell SupportAssist (DSA) v3.9.0.234. When testing you should:

  • Re-boot after making any change to either the System Repair setting in the DSA interface or the Start Type of the Dell SupportAssist Remediation service at Start | Windows Administrative Tools | Services. (note: The re-boot is important - simply changing the Start Type of the Dell SupportAssist Remediation service or stopping / starting the service without a re-boot will not produce consistent results.)
  • Wait for 10 or 15 min after the re-boot before launching DSA to check the System Repair settings

A. System Repair ON or OFF / DSA Remediation Service STOPPED (Start Type "Disabled" + re-boot)

If the Dell SupportAssist Remediation Service does not start at boot-up (Start Type "Disabled" + re-boot) I see same "We couldn't get information about your system backups right now. Try again later" warning.

B. System Repair ON / DSA Remediation Service RUNNING [Start Type "Automatic (Delayed Start)" + re-boot]

With the default settings, the System Repair setting is checked and says "System Repair is turned on" and the radio buttons are visible.

C. System Repair OFF / DSA Remediation Service RUNNING [Start Type "Automatic (Delayed Start)" + re-boot]

The System Repair setting is unchecked and says "System Repair is turned off" and the radio buttons are missing.  That's what I'll see as long as I wait ~ 10 minutes after re-boot, but on occasion I'll get that same "We couldn't get information about your system backups right now. Try again later" warning - especially if I launch DSA immediately after re-booting. Test results are a bit erratic under these conditions.

About the wiping out of backup files:
...You say on May 8 8:59 PM that after disabling Dell SupportAssist Remediation Services the day before (May 7) that all the system snapshots created by System Repair have been wiped off your hard drive. However, on May 6 12:09 PM you said that even though you had System Repair turned off and you expected all the files and subfolders in C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\Snapshots to be purged when you disabled System Repair, they were not purged.  So, is there a time lapse between turning off System Repair and file purging?? ....

Sorry, I have no idea what I did that caused all the snapshots in my hidden folder C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\ to be purged. I only know it occurred some time between the early morning of 06-May-2021 and the evening of 08-May-2021.

I suspect the snapshots will only be purged if System Repair is turned OFF since this is the expected behaviour. As I noted <here>, I turned OFF System Repair in the DSA v3.8.0.23 settings on 03-May-2021 and saw the warning "When System Repair is turned off, we'll remove any backups we created for you and free up any hard drive space that they used. You can turn System Repair back on at any time if you'd like to back up important system files again". I don't know why the snapshots weren't immediately deleted then, but perhaps my update to DSA v3.9.0.234 or the unexpected reinstall of SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.1.14594 the evening of 05-May-2021 triggered something. I'd have to do more testing to confirm.
