SupportAssist Os Recovery can't install

From SupportAssist 3.6, I install Os Recovery tool. However, it takes more than 8 hours but it hasn't finished yet. While installing, my partitions disappear. Does install this app remove my partitions??

Hi Salah 1:

Sadly, there does appear to be a bug in the installer for the latest SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.1.14594 where data can be damaged if the hard drive has more than one partition (i.e., in addition to C:\ drive).

See balji's 09-May-2021 thread SupportAssist Deleted My Partitions While Installing OS Recovery in the Inspiron board as well as georgiev209's 09-May-2021 post in my thread Problem Updating To SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.1.14594.

This likely isn't related to your problem, but when you launch SupportAssist and go to Options (gear icon) | About SupportAssist does it run an automatic check and auto-update you to the current v3.9.0.234?

Yes it is the latest version of Support Assist. And you are right, my hard disk has more than one partition. All of them disappear due to the installation.

Hi @NikhilKiroula :

Is Dell investigating this bug where users who created additional partitions on their hard drive (e.g., D:\ drive) can lose data on those partitions when SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.1.14594 is installed, and if it is a known issue shouldn't the update be pulled from the Dell servers?

I posted on 09-May-2021 in my thread Problem Updating To SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.1.14594 that I recalled seeing a brief message that said something like "Wait while we create a new partition..." message in the DSA v3.9.0 interface while it was installing the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.1.14594 update. I only have a C:\ drive on my hard drive so I didn't suffer any data loss, but since 09-May-2021 more users who have created additional partitions on their hard drive (e.g., a D:\ drive to store personal user data) have reported that they lost important data files while installing this update.

In case you are not able to download cab file then you will always face download issue.

Thanks

I do not see any version 5.4.1.14594 of the OS recovery tool. The version that Dell is currently providing here appears to be version 2.1.2025.0.A00 (or maybe just 2.1.2025.0). Is the version you are referencing a separate application that is only installed through Support Assist on Dell systems?

Hi Randyful:

Yes, as far as I know, the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.x I'm referring to are only offered via SupportAssist and/or Dell Update / Command Update. The full set of tools is ~ 350 MB in size and is responsible for creating daily system repair points (snapshots) that you can use to roll back your system back a few days or weeks if it becomes unstable (i.e., similar to the way that the built-in Windows System Restore feature works but with a few extra bells and whistles).

Dell SupportAssist v3_10_1_23 Update Installing OS Recovery v5_4_3_15135 29 Jul 2021.png

Once the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools are installed you should see:

  • A program called Dell SupportAssist Remediation listed at Control Panel | Programs | Programs an Features; there will also be a service called Dell SupportAssist Remediation with a Startup type of "Automatic (Delayed Start)" that starts after boot-up at Start | Windows Administrative Tools | Services. Note that SupportAssist v3.10.1.23 delivered the current SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.3.15135 to my system on 29-Jul-2021.
  • A SupportAssist OS Recovery control panel (settings manager) at Control Panel | System and Security | SupportAssist OS Recovery.
  • A new System Repair setting in SupportAssist at Options (gear icon) | Settings | System Repair where you can enable / disable System Repair (a.k.a. Dell SupportAssist Remediation) and choose the maximum amount of disk space your Dell system repair points will use. Note that the same settings can be controlled at Control Panel | System and Security | SupportAssist OS Recovery | Settings | System Repair.
  • A hidden and protected folder created at C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\ where a system repair point (snapshot) should be automatically created each day. Note that you can view the contents of this folder if you change the folder settings in File Explorer to show hidden files (View | Hidden Items | ENABLED) and run the TreeSize Free utility with Administrator rights to browse to C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\. Note that my TreeSize image below was captured in May 2021 when System Repair was enabled and shows this folder was using ~ 22 GB of disk space.

See the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery User’s Guide and the support article Restore Your System Using Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery if you want to learn more about this software.

If I understand correctly, the Dell OS Recovery Tool v2.3.6096.0 (not SupportAssist Recovery Tools v5.x) you are referring to that is available at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-ca/drivers/osiso/recoverytool is just a small 22 MB utility that can be used to create a bootable USB recovery drive. If your computer ever fails to boot from your hard drive this USB recovery drive can be used to boot up your computer and "remove all data and software from your PC's hard drive and restore the factory-installed operating system."

Hi Salah 1:

Further to your original problem about your damaged partitions, see Dell employee Nikhil Kiroula's 15-Jul-2021 post in DELLKaren's thread Problems with SupportAssist 3.10.0.47 that stated that "We have removed System Repair settings from SA from 3.9.2 release onwards due to some major issue with SA OS Recovery tool during partitioning process".

My SupportAssist self-updated from v3.10.0.47 to v3.10.1.23 on 29-Jul-2021 and then began installing the latest SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.3.15135 without my permission - see my 03-Aug-2021 thread SupportAssist OS Recovery v5.4.3.15135 Not Creating System Repair Points. As noted in that thread, my System Repair settings have now re-appeared in the SupportAssist v3.10.1.23 interface but I have not been able to confirm that SupportAssist OS Recovery v5.4.3.15135 actually fixed the bug where installation of this software could damage partitions higher than C:\ drive.

I've DISABLED System Repair in my SupportAssist settings and changed the Startup type of the Dell SupportAssist Remediation service to DISABLED to stop the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools from running on my Inspiron 5584, and I plan to uninstall the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools from my system the next time I have to perform a clean reinstall of SupportAssist (see Dell employee DELL-Chris M's instructions at SA Uninstall/Reinstall).  In the mean time I've installed Macrium Reflect Free and I am now using this imaging software to create the occasional full disk image of my entire hard drive (as well as a bootable USB recovery drive) if I ever need to perform an emergency recovery for a problem that can't be repaired with the built-in Windows 10 recovery environment (WinRE).
