Dock external video troubleshooting and single thread

Trying to consolidate all of the dock video threads into a single one.  This will help me to gather information on what is and is not working out there and get it to engineering to resolve.    I'll edit this first post to keep everything updated in one place.  This should make it much easier to find information going forward.

Steps to take before reporting an issue:

1) Check the revision on your dock.   If you look at the bottom of the dock, you will see a variety of labels.   The PPID label is on the right side of the group of labels and will include a revision number at the end.   Verify that you have an A01 revision.   If you have A00 and if video doesn't work after trying the remaining steps in this guide, contact support and have your A00 replaced with A01.

2) Be sure to update your device to the latest BIOS (currently A11 for the 713x and A07 for the 5130).  For the 713x, select the appropriate version for your product.

3) Update to the latest video driver.   This is currently 3496 for the 713x and 3366 for the 5130 (note that 5130 driver is bundled in the A06 chipset driver).

4) Connect your monitor(s) to the dock.   The preferred method is to use straight DP to DP or HDMI to HDMI cables.   Dongles will work, but note that DP dongles must be "active".   DP++ dongles (non-active) will not work with this docking station.   Passive HDMI dongles are OK.   Use good quality cables and dongles.   Monitors should be HDCP compliant.

5) Turn monitors on and set up external video either via the Intel graphics driver options or via WIndows Devices/Project option.   The 5130 will support the LCD + one external display (two displays can mirror content if desired).  The 713x will support the LCD + two external displays (each displaying unique content).  The 713x will support daily chained DP 1.2 monitors.  Dual external monitors can run at FHD (1920) and a single external monitor via DP can support 2560.

6) At this point, your external monitor should be working.   If it is not, a couple of additional troubleshooting steps to take follow.

6.1) Remove and reinsert monitor cable to dock.

6.2) Make sure dock power is good (LED at front of dock should always be on when good power is present)

6.3) Make sure that monitor has correct input source selected and that cabling is routed to correct ports.

6.4) Undock and redock tablet to see if any change occurs.

6.5) For the 713x tablets, try rolling back to the A00 video driver 3316 to see if this makes any difference.

7) If external video is still not working as you expect it to, please post to this thread with the following information.

7.1) Confirmation that you have tried the above steps and that you do indeed have an A01 dock.

7.2) Brand and model number of your monitor(s).

7.3) Setup information (e.g. how is everything connected)

7.4) If using dongles, brand and model number of dongle if known

7.5) Specific problem(s) you are seeing.

Watch for updates to this thread as information develops.   I'll be updating below tables fairly frequently - I need to dig up the test reports and add all of that information here soon.

I agree with that. My old 4:3 screen plugged with a DVI:HDMI cable is instant compared to the brand new Dell DP monitor.  Plus 1 time on 2, the driver is loosing its settings from my Intel Display Manager Profile going from extended display to cloned on 2 screens instead of 3 like I saved in my profile.  Resolutions are all messed up often after coming back from sleep too.

I rolled back to A10 and the A01 driver.

Had terrible graphics performance on the A02 and battery life was reduced by 30% for me.

Brian, I never saw a clear reply earlier. How do you tell if you have an A00 or A01 dock? Mine doesn't have a white sticker, but it's also shipped in March which is later than the most of the A00 docks. The model # is K10A Type K10A001? On a side note, my dock does not have a serial number and after following the above procedures trying to get my U2212 (bought new from Dell in May of last year) to work on DP I called tech support. Basically after asking me to look for the serial number for 15 minutes to 'just make sure you aren't missing it' they basically said they can't help me without me getting the original Dell order number (which with a big centralized purchasing department is not as simple as you might think). Thanks, Mike

The driver is really not working great :( Even though I saved my screens configuration and resolutions into a profile, when the tablet goes sleep, it often resets things to weird configs.  Im extended desktop on 2 external screens and when it bugs, its resetting to 1 external as clone.

Im using the latest video driver, BIOS is up to date and windows update too.

Mike, look at the label on the bottom. It's real tinny.

@jfhallee I have the same issue, but for me it's only when I'm actually docked. I can dock and undock without issue going from 2 externals to tablet screen and back. It can go to sleep undocked and when I come back in the office and dock it it's fine, but if I let it sleep on the dock I get the wakeup to tablet screen and clone to 1 external display.

@GregPolen - Thanks. Maybe they could have printed it a little smaller. I refuse to get out my reading glasses (not that I own a pair, how did those get there, this isn't even my desk....)

HAHA, I had to put on two pair to double up the magnification. LOL

There is a general issue with the Venue 11 Pro displaying non-native resolutions much smaller on external displays and projectors, both using the dock and using mini-HDMI from the tablet.

This is documented on the forum here and there has been no solution offered yet, this is a Driver issue and I would like to know if Dell has escalated the issue with Intel to get it resolved.

I can confirm that my Venue 11 7130 vPro is now working with two external displays in addition to the built-in display. My setup is as follows:

A01 dock
Dell E2210 connected via Monoprice HDMI-to-DVI adapter cable @ 1680x1050
Dell U2312HM connected via Monoprice DP 1.2-compliant cable @ 1680x1050
Built-in display @ 1680x1050

This setup was NOT working prior to my restoring the tablet to factory settings this morning. After the restore I installed BIOS A11 and video driver 3496. At this point everything but the DP-attached U2312HM was working (monitor showed up in the DP topology, but remained in sleep mode). None of Brian's recommended troubleshooting steps worked except for one: installing the 3316 drivers - which I did right over top of the 3496 drivers. My system seems to work great with 3316.

I've been rebooting, sleeping, and un/re-docking the tablet (and all combinations in between) for the past 20 minutes and can't seem to get it to fail. Notably, I have the display set to never fall asleep while on AC, but rather I use the screensaver to blank the display.

I'm now content with the multiple display setup on this tablet. Notably, I too see 1080p video chop issues with both my internal and DP-attached displays - but both of these run at a higher-res than the HDMI-to-DVI-attached display which does not have any choppiness on the same video.

Just wanted to give you guys a little status update.   We have a team working on these issues all week.  They have multiple new video drivers in test and have been able to fix many of the monitor issues listed in this thread.   Once everything known is confirmed resolved, the driver will go through a formal test and then be released on support.dell.com.   I'll keep you posted on progress.   Thanks!

Brian, Thanks for the update - its good to know that the team are making progress. Just one additional "funny" that I've noticed over the past couple of days. My Venue Pro 11 (vPro 7130) is connected to a P2314H via DP. Overnight, if I leave it docked it is set to turn the display off, but stay awake. On the last two days, when I've come in to work in the morning, I've woken the Venue by moving the mouse, but the external monitor has not woken up. The Venue is starting as though it is not connected to an external monitor at all. Yesterday (when I was using the A02 video drivers) it took a lot of fiddling around to fix this - even rebooting didn't solve the problem. Eventually, I found the fix was to unplug the power from the dock and plug it back in (i.e. reboot the dock). Doing this fixed the problem immediately. Today (having downgraded to the A00 video drivers) I hit the problem again; rebooting the dock fixed it straight away. Just thought I'd pass this on, as it feels like a different problem to the "DP monitor takes ages to wake up after redocking" problem (where, in that case, the Venue knows the DP monitor is there and is extending the desktop to it - the monitor just isn't displaying anything). In this new problem, the Venue doesn't believe the monitor is there at all. Ed

Same exact monitor on DP and same exact issue here. Every morning I have to pull the power from docking station and plug it back in to get this DP monitor reconnected. Sometimes happens during the day if I am away from desk and monitor goes to sleep. If I check in the display properties when this problem happens, the monitor is not even there, even if I hit the detect displays button. But if reseat power its all good for awhile. Dock revision A01. Also, video driver A00 is definitely the fastest when it comes to waking this monitor up.

This is the workaround we use as well.

Also notice the monitors i have using a hdmi to hdmi or even hdmi to dvi don't enter power saving mode. They do but in a loop.
