Intermittent WIFI connection?

If you are experiencing intermittent WIFI connection on the Venue 11 Pro 5130 or 7130, we need your help.   The problem I am attempting to gather more information on is that the WIFI driver won't always reconnect to a known router after a sleep cycle.   If you toggle the wireless radio off and back on, it will then connect as expected.   In addition, you can probably manually reconnect to the router or AP.

If you are experiencing this problem, please provide the following details so that we can get this fixed once and for all.  The newer versions of the driver were expected to fully resolve this, but I'm hearing of some issues with specific routers still.

Here is what I need:

System model and processor (core or Vpro for the 7130)
Router make and model
Router firmware version (if known)
Security setting (if known)  (e.g. WPA)

Thanks!

Problem reported on:

Asus RT-N12B1
Proxim AP-700 v4.0.1

Brian,

Mine appears to be happening on ANY router I connect to.  I thought it was an issue at home only, where I use a Netgear R7000 router. However I have been able to replicate this issue on a Cisco Linksys E2500, Actiontec DSL Modem/WiFi router combo, Asus N66, and also at my job, which uses Cisco Enterprise Wireless APs.  The only workaround I have found, is to disable the power conservation feature which disables the wifi card to conserve power. However, my battery dies in 45 minutes. Again, my tablet is useless at this point :(.  Thanks for your reply.

System model and processor: 7130 vPro
Router make and model: Netgear WNR1000v2
Router firmware version: V1.2.2.72NA
Security setting (if known): WPA2

I've been going crazy trying to nail down what the problem is with this machine; I want to like it, but it's absolutely useless if the wifi is spotty, and it most definitely is. I've tried every suggested fix I can find online for this to no avail - see below for a summary of what those are.

I can at least describe my version of this problem, because it seems to have settled into consistency now. The connection stays solid on the tablet, as long as I don't put it to sleep by pressing the power button. If it goes to sleep on its own, it will stay connected - at least short term, I haven't tested this overnight or anything. But pressing the button, for some reason, causes it to disconnect from my network pretty much instantly. Is the sleep brought on by pressing the power button fundamentally different from the sleep the system enters on its own via a time setting?

Upon waking it with another button press, it will not reconnect - even though when I open the network slider on the side, "connect automatically" is checked. I'll have to put in the WPA passphrase again. It's extremely frustrating, as I don't like to just toss mobile devices aside and wait for the screen to time out, I always manually shut the screen off when I'm done using them, and don't feel I should have to alter this behavior because this tablet refuses to cooperate. If this remains unresolved, I'll have to return it.

I don't know if this behavior matches others' experience, but it seems to be consistent (at least as of the past few hours). I've applied every driver update I could through Dell and Windows Update, and tried all the suggested fixes elsewhere:

Tablet is NOT allowed to turn wifi off to save power

Power Plan settings for wifi are set to Disabled

Various netsh commands have been applied

Nothing has fixed it. Please, someone from Dell, acknowledge this issue and provide a fix, or at the very least confirm it's being actively worked on.

EDIT: I just realized something significant that I hadn't before - I'm new to Windows 8. When the system is timing out and shutting off the display, it's only doing that - not actually going to sleep. When I hit the power button, I assume it is immediately entering sleep, so sleep mode is almost certainly the culprit. I took for granted that the same thing was happening in both situations, but as I was reviewing the power plan settings, I saw this was not the case. Wanted to update this to avoid spreading any misinformation accidentally.

I have a Dell Venue 11 Pro with an Atom 23770 CPU. I have a Comcast model 5 cable modem/router. It is running the following system software: eMTA & DOCSIS Software Version: 7.6.59S and is using WPA/WPA2 security. When I first encountered the problem I did some internet searches and found that Windows updates KB 2887595 and KB 2903939 were causing the problem. I uninstalled them and the problem went away. Everything was working fine until Windows update KB 2967919 came along and once again I could no longer connect to my WIFI. I removed KB 2967919 and my WIFI started working again. It sure seems like there are some incompatibilities between Microsoft update and Dell supplied software. Hope you can figure this out as I really like the Venue 11 except for this problem.

Hello, I am using the 5130 Venue 11 pro. My issue is that the wifi card is having a max speed of 62 Mbps (on 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz). This issue occurs on N-networks 1 meter before my asus RT-N66U-router. Anybody who recognizes this and knows a solution ? Thx

I'm updating my previous post. After uninstalling KB 2967919 my WIFI stayed connected for about 6 hours and then went away again. This always happens while I'm using it so it doesn't have anything to do with the tablet going into sleep mode. I then uninstalled update KB 2883200 and rebooted and the WIFI started working again. KB 2883200 was the other update mentioned in the post regarding KB 2887595 and KB 2903939. Very strange indeed. If I lose WIFI again I will uninstall a non related update and see if the WIFI connection comes back.

I just received a refurbished V8P/32 from Dell Outlet, orig build date was Dec 2013, network 1538 driver ver. was 3.7.2.55. Had issue from day one with wifi not fully connecting on waking of tablet. Work around was to cycle wifi off and back on, then it would connect each time. Suspecting the driver, I updated it to the 3.7.2.59.A04 version, and that seems to have resolved the issue. So happens after that I came upon this thread and thought I would add my comments. Thanks.

Thanks - glad to hear it seems to have resolved for you.

How about the rest of you?

I have just returned a DVP 8" (64GB and all up to date win8.1.Update) for sometimes showing "Limited" for wifi. I have other devices connected to the wifi and during that time they are performing fine so it is not the local wifi in the house.

I found I had to reboot to get it to connect after it showed "Limited." Toggling it on and off did not help once it had made up it's mind it was going to be Limited. It would do the Limited thing about one-in-five times connecting. I had "Always connect" unchecked as I like to connect only when I need it.

Not sure if this is the same issue, and with it now on it's way back, I can't help fault find.

New drivers did not fix the Intermittent WIFI connection on our V8Ps. Yes it doesn't show limited anymore. Always shows connected but browsing the Internet or local network fails a lot of times and a off/on cycle is needed.

But this thread is for V11P not V8P.

Brian: do you need info for just sleep or hibernate as well (never had the problem after sleep but hibernate)? My system is a 7130 i5 MS which supports connected standby and I would have to disable CS to see hibernation behavior.

Brian, This is my 1st ever post. I have applied each driver update as it has come along (including A05) and tried all workarounds mentioned in this and other forums, but still have patchy connection. I purchased the Venue 11 pro i3 7130 for my daughter when she started University this year and have regretted it ever since. Short freeze-ups have been tolerable but the WiFi connectability is a real problem, especially if she is doing an online assessment and the pc goes to sleep. The problem occurs with any network.(Netgear N600 at home, 2 networks at Uni, even a Telstra 4G wifi-dongle). Usually coincides with sleep or cold boot. WiFi returns only after "restart". 90% time. There have been rare occasions when it will operate normally. 10% time. NEW SYMPTOM - something I haven't seen mentioned yet is that there will often(30% time) be a connection/response from IE (desktop + metro) but not from News or Music Apps. They remain offline. Hope this helps.

Hi, have stumbled across this thread as a hope to fix the Dell Venue 8 connecting to mobile hotspot problem. Since upgrading the 1538 driver to A04 (3.7.2.59) the device now no longer finds my mobile device hotspot. Finds what you would call normal wifi devices no problem at all. Have even performed a clean install of the driver - and set it's aggressive roaming properties to highest Any suggestions? ta

Hi, have discovered something which may help. If I logon to a normal wifi device the mobile hotspot becomes visible to the Dell. Indeed I can drop the original connection and logon to the mobile hotspot. If I turn wifi off then back on I can only see the normal wifi - again the mobile hotspot only becomes visible once I connect to the normal wifi. Hope that helps.

Hi Brian. Good to hear that there might be a solution after all. After spending more than 20 hours of trying to just get my tablet to work, I'm close to giving up.

Venue 11 Pro 5130
A Fritzbox Router
Router Firmware 06.05
WPA + WPA2

I've just installed the new driver mentioned in this thread. It would be fantastic if that did the trick. Let's wait and see.

Thank you
