Hijack This Log file

hi, i've been trouble with my computer which has periodically been slowing down.  It'll start up fine, but it slows down every few seconds.  At first I figured it must be spyware, so I downloaded a few programs, adaware, windows defender, and pctools spyware doctor.  Ran Mcafee virus scan a few times-even tried toolbar cop.  They all worked to a certain degree, unfortunately the computer is still slowing down so I figure there must be something else running in the background which is degrading performance.  Anyway, here's my hijackthis log.  Let me know what you think.

Close all other open windows except Hijackthis and Select " Fix checked"

Close Hijackthis ->>Reboot your PC

2. *NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.

  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced." deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

3. Reboot your PC ->> Rerun Hijackthis and post a fresh Hijackthis log and give me an update on how your PC is running now

no good, my computer still gets extremely slow at times-to the point wherei have to wait for it to react whenever I click on icons.  I've tried everything, defragging, scandisk, I uninstalled a few programs thinking they where conflicting or slowing down the system but no good.  I was also wondering if my problem could stem from the Internet Explorer browser itself.  I'm beginning to suspect the browser is actually corrupt since it use to display odd text in the titlebar until I installed StopZilla and used ToolbarCop to disable a few things.  Another side note-Safe mode works great.

Toolbar cop might be preventing their removal.

I still don't see anything malware/spyware related in your log.

Let's check one more thing

Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE and Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As") to download Silent Runners.

  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click the new text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.

*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Note that I've run a series of scans and disabled a few add-ons since my last post.  The most I've found are some Ares malware and a series of tracers, but still nothing major for the most part.  The system is actually running smooth right now but it tends to only slow down during certain times.  Is it possible I have a trojan which is only active during certain times of the day?

Note that I've run a series of scans and disabled a few add-ons since my last post. The most I've found are some Ares malware and a series of tracers, but still nothing major for the most part. The system is actually running smooth right now but it tends to only slow down during certain times. Is it possible I have a trojan which is only active during certain times of the day?

1. The program Ares you mentioned, is a P2P file sharing program. Most of us in the anti spyware/malware community consider P2P programs to be risky at best. Since they allow 2 way communication, it leaves a door open for infection. Caution should be used with these programs. Some things you may consider
a. They should never be left on unless in use at the time.
b. They shoud never be run on Startup.

You have yours set to run on Startup. To stop this

Rerun Hijackthis (scan only) and place a check beside the follwoing entry
  • O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ares] "C:\Ares\Ares.exe" -h

Close all other open windows except Hijackthis and Select " Fix checked"

Close Hijackthis and reboot your PC

2. As far as the question regarding a trojan; yes it is possible for a trojan to become active at certain times, but I see no signs of a trojan infection on your PC.

thanks for all your help, I've figured out what the problem was though.  I'm running an Inspiron 5150 labtop computer.  I've had issues in the past with dust clinging to the heatsink since the cpu is located so close to the vent(which dell decided to place under the labtop facing the desk).  As a matter of fact I've had the labtop replaced 3 times since I bought it and I assumed they would have fixed the apparent design flaw by now-unfortunately I'll have to resolve it myself by spraying compressed air in the back every now and then.

The program i used to measure the temperature of the cpu is called I8KFanGUI.exe-it also displays your cpu speed which thanks to speedswitch will drop to nearly half it's normal speed (3ghz-1.5ghz) whenever the cpu heats up too much.  This unfortunately leads to fluctuations in speed which make the system "freeze up" every now and then.  Again-thanks for all the help, at the very least my computer should be free of malware/spyware/trojans/etc etc.
