How should i approach my lag problem, comp got slow...

Hey

For the last few days my computer has been really laggy. The clearest indicator of this is that my winamp plays but gets jittery when i open a new program or when i download torrents. I tried playing in windows media player and had the same problem, so it's probably something to do with my computer.

The problem started when i woke up and checked my computer and saw a blue error screen. (usually i leave my laptop on to d/l stuff) This has happened before two times (me waking up and seeing an error), and both times i just turned the computer off to restart. When it restarted, it booted much slower than it usually does. I also noticed that the general temperature of the comp is higher. Both times, i just let the comp rest for like 8 hours, boot it up again, and it returns back to normal.

This third time, it didnt go back to normal. Its not super slow but the lag is very annoying and noticeable, and the computer takes 2x as long to boot. I checked for spyware using adaware, spybot, and microsoft's antispyware beta. All found nothing. I checked for viruses using a webroot spysweeper trial version and kaspersky antivirus. They both found nothing. So im beginning to believe that somehow i damaged the hardware.

I didnt download any new programs when this lag started happening.
When i download off the internet speeds are still normal.

I have an i8600 w/ winXP SP2 with 512MB ram. (1.5 yrs old) The fan doesnt seem to have problems (ie its not constantly whirring. The computer's temp doesn't seem hotter or colder. I'm at a loss of what i can do to fix this :/. I just defragged, it didnt fix the problem. Even when i chose to not boot any startup the lag was still there. And Ive run chkdsk C:/r and chkdsk C:/f. Neither fixed my problem. CPU usage seems to be fine.

sorry my post isn't that organized, but I searched and found this post:
http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=si_sysperf&message.id=18573&c=us&l=en&cs=&s=gen

which pretty much describes my problem exactly.

any help appreciated. Thanks.
