Thanks. But that doesn't answer the question of how to permanently prevent it from starting up.

WKDetect is a program that looks for updates for Microsoft Works. You can do this manually every so often.

I'm doing it in the msconfig.

Are you unchecking after running "msconfig"? Or just in the programs /start up?
You have to go to Strart/run/type "msconfig" no quotes you'll get your System Config Utility Click the startup tab uncheck wkdetect click apply/ok. You will have to reboot. Upon booting up again you'll get a box saying you changed your setting check the box and exit..

Then it will not run on startup! If you are trying to get rid of it alltogether it's in your Microsoft Works folder. But be fore warned it is not wise to do it.

See if it is listed in the startup folder: Start>Programs>Startup. If it is there right click and delete it. You should also be able to go into the MSworks setup and turn it off. I don't have MSworks so I can't give more specific instructions.

I think what is happening is what happens to me too.
I go to Msconfig and uncheck it, apply it, restart computer,
yada yada and it's gone.....for awhile or until I reboot and then
in Msconfig-startup it's baaaack and checked.
However, like you mentioned, it is not listed in processes as
running. Seems strange that it keeps appearing in startup tho.
In Msconfig--services it stays unchecked and says it's stopped.

Thanks for the information. I would say then it is not running if you see it unchecked in services and it is not in the list of running processes. Just out of curiosity, do you have any other listings duplicated in Services (check hide all MS services before looking) and Startup? I have none. Either an item appears in one list or the other...not in both.

Another way is to check your system registry

I think it is hk local and software and microsoft and run / run once etc. If you see it there you can delete the entry.

BACKUP your registry first with the export in case you mess up.

ebowe,

Why do you think it is still running at startup? Are you saying it gets rechecked on a reboot or do you see wkdetect.exe in running processes?

ygor,
I don't "think" I do. Wow, when you hide MS services you don't have
much left!
What is that Netropa NHK Server? It is the only one that says

Hmm, That is funny because I have Windows XP and MS Office puts itself in the startup folder anytime I install any Office Program. I installed Excel 2002 the other night and guess what? It put the MS Office startup in the startup folder. I don't think you can make a blanket statement that XP does not work that way when I have proof that it does.

Maybe Works doesn't, I don't know. I merely suggested that they look in the startup folder to see if it was in there as that was a possiblity. It does not hurt to look just in case does it?

caddellwr,

You are correct. Those shortcuts do get installed. I was looking in the startup folder for the default user which appeared empty, but the shortcuts were actually in the startup folder for All Users! I am embarrassed.
