XPS 8930 Bios Failed

Hello,

I tried to update the BIOS last night(it said it was urgent) and after the restart, it wouldnt boot up. What I got was the 3,6, blinking lights.

I followed the directions here:

https://www.dell.com/community/XPS-Desktops/XPS-8930-dead-motherboard/m-p/7388798#M27825

But I still cant get into the recovery screen. I press and hold the ctrl and esc keys as instructed but it eventually goes into the 3,6, lights again. I removed the cmos battery and unplugged the cord for 1 min (or longer)

Tried again and nothing. It just wont go into recovery mode with the USB. Please help. My only option is purchasing another MOBO. Is that even an option, to upgrade the motherboard? Any suggestions are needed.

I have tried this solution and I cannot get my pc to boot into recovery mode.

I have pressed and held both the ctrl+esc key but it will not boot into recovery mode.

3, 6 blinking lights mean 'Recovery image not found'.

See this: https://www.dell.com/support/article/en-us/sln300716/how-to-recover-the-bios-on-a-dell-computer-or-tablet?lang=en

Look at the Frequently Asked Question, "Where is the BIOS Recovery File?"

when you remove cmos battery, unplugging cord is not enough to drain power from system. you need to press power button for 15-30 sec too.  also try reset cmos jumper on motherboard.  try not to update bios next time unless absolutely crucial as these bios updates are often buggy.

Yeah I know that now! Lol

Followed your directions...nothing. same result. USB drive is being accessed for BIOS_IMG.rcv, then straight to 3,6, blinking lights.

I think I'm just screwed. Can I purchase the same motherboard from Dell or is there an upgrade?

Yes Fat 32. Still nothing. USB drive is Being accessed, then right back to the 3, 6, amber lights. My monitor doesnt even flash on. Just stays in standby mode. ( No signal)

It sounds like you need to keep trying until the system is forced into recovery mode.  according to below even Dell knows it does not always work.  not sure how many times you got to try this.  my advice is to think of it as a cardiac arrest.  keep on the cycle of compression, check, compression.

As soon as you power the system on, press and hold down the CTRL + ESC keys until the BIOS Recovery page appears. (If it can’t enter the BIOS Recovery page, then remove the power cord and CMOS battery coin and wait for about 1 min, then re-plug the power cord and reseat the CMOS battery and repeat step 9.)

yeah I've tried all the steps, how many times do I need to remove the cmos battery and plug?

I keep thinking that one time I had to go into the bios settings awhile ago and I could have sworn I saw that the BIOS Auto-Recovery was disabled by default. Would that have any bearings on why I'm having trouble?

It is possible that #1 bios recovery via hdd or #2 bios auto-recovery on boot is disabled.  does not look like BR2 from usb can be disabled.

BIOS recovery 3:

#1 Enabled #2 Enabled BR2 from HDD or USB and BR3 on Boot
#1 Enabled #2 Disabled BR2 from HDD or USB only
#1 Disabled N/A BR2 from USB only
#1 Disabled N/A BR2 from USB only

have you tried recovering bios from hdd?

Once a SATA or M.2 NVMe drive is replaced, you can reinstate the BIOS Recovery capability by reinstituting the default configuration on the SATA HDD or M.2 NVMe SSD

Remove any newly added or replaced SATA HDD or M.2 NVMe SSD from the system

Re-connect the SATA HDD or NVMe SSD that originally shipped with the unit

Reconnect the power cord and power on the system. Wait for 20 to 30 seconds, for the system to boot into the BIOS recovery menu automatically

Do you have the original hdd or ssd?  Did you wait at least 30 sec?

Plug in your USB stick with the BIOS .exe file while PC is powered off. And when you power on, if you see the Dell splash (logo) screen, tap F12 and -hopefully- that menu will open. On the F12 menu, select the BIOS Update option and follow the prompts. Maybe that will still work...

If your PC is under warranty, read this about Dell's warranty coverage after a BIOS update fails on a PC under warranty.

Have Service Tag handy if/when you contact Dell Tech Support...

Yes, Dell BIOS recovery is difficult ... but users report that it usually eventually works (if you actually follow the complicated steps). Most users are impatient and give up (and go back to playing with their phone).

Be sure to carefully read what the user's here are suggesting.

Try unplugging, dissipating flea-power, and then removing the CMOS battery. There is also usually a "reset BIOS/CMOS jumper (so use it). Leave it like that dead for 24 hours. Then, carefully re-assemble and try.

Problem with "new XPS-8930 motherboard" is:
- It's gonna be pricey
- It may not come with a new Windows-10 key burned into it (and I bet you don't know your existing one). New Windows license is $100-$200.

Finally, see this. If you still can't recover the BIOS (as designed) then ... if you ask nicely ... they might make an exception (or help you in some way):

That's the thing, my monitor just stays in standby mode during all the steps to get it into recover mode.

Absolutely nothing comes on the screen.

If you're under warranty, contact Dell Tech Support and ask to get a replacement motherboard because of the BIOS update failure.

If you're not under warranty, contact Dell Spare Parts at 1-800-357-3355 and order a new motherboard.

BTW: Are you sure you've connected the monitor to the add-in (AMD or NVidia) video card, assuming you have an add-in video card, not to either of the onboard HDMI or DisplayPort video ports?

You could try physically removing the add-in video card and connecting the monitor to one of those two onboard video ports. Maybe you'll see the splash screen now...

I'm not worried about money I'm a first responder and my pc has been my lifeline during this pandemic. I dont have the time to keep doing these steps if they are not going to work.

I need a fast resolution now, or atleast get the motherboard in route to me.

Thanks for all the help though!

Not under warranty, expired last year this month.

I do have it connected to my Nvidia 1060. Maybe I will try the onboard?
