XPS 8940, screen black after overnight sleep

After overnight sleep and on wake (keyboard press), display glows and flickers but does not display screen. HDD starts OK. Must reboot and unplug/plug HDMI cable from built-in HDMI port. Monitor is always on and in standby mode.

Works normal at times but have had 4 failures since initial setup (always after overnight sleep).

Behaves as if power and/or data is not present on HDMI port.

Dell XPS 8940, 32GB Ram.

Out of Box setup         09-13-2021

Display adapter:          Intel UHD 750 Graphics adapter, No graphics card.

Display Driver:            06/01/21, version 27.20.100.9664. No updates available.

Monitor:                       Samsung SD27D360 set to HDMI source.

BIOS                           Primary Display set to UHD Graphics (was Auto).

All Dell/Windows 10 updates have been applied.

Tried two different monitors and three cables.

Works OK after short sleep (3-6 hours) and wake.

Works OK after screen shutoff (20 minutes) and wake.

Power options set to High Performance.

Advanced power options: Hybrid sleep set to disabled, Link State Power Management set to off

Event log shows nothing out of ordinary.

No other issues with overheating, CPU load, fan speed, etc..

BIOS version: 2.1.3

Dated: 07-21-2021

Dell, Intel and Microsoft updates all report no update needed.

Side note: Intel reports UHD video driver update 27.20.100.9864 which I installed. However, Windows update puts it back to 27.20.100.9664

NVidia v27.20.100.9664 is the latest on Dell's site for XPS 8940.

There is BIOS 2.2.0 but I don't think it has anything to help this issue.

There are some other instances reported where an XPS 8940 using Intel UHD Graphics doesn't finish the POST for 5-10 min and screen stays black the entire time. That's why I asked about your version of BIOS. Don't know what version of BIOS is used on those other systems, but this might be a common BIOS issue.

BTW: How long have you waited when you see the black screen to see what happens?

When booting up or restarting, see Dell logo right away followed by desktop 5-10 seconds later.

I too saw those posts where users had troubles with monitor not coming on.

When awaking from sleep, desktop appears 5-7 seconds when functioning properly. When black (no desktop and monitor is still in standby mode), never waited beyond 60 seconds before rebooting via Windows key-X-U-R since can't see anything.

As mentioned before, turning monitor off/on is no help.

NO issues when awakening with PC power button (desktop appears 5-7 seconds)

I've had a similar problem with my XPS 8940. I got mine from Costco, have 48 G RAM, and I've got the Nvidia Geforce 3060Ti in mine. It's been an issue ever since I bought the computer. When waking from sleep, the monitors do not turn on. I end up having to power down and power back up to get things back to normal. Temporarily hitting power button to awaken computer doesn't work either. Only solution appears to be never have my computer go to sleep.

It's hard to predict when it will happen because sometimes things work fine when I wake it from sleep, but other times it doesn't.

Sounds like a low volt drop from the PSU that's probably from a faulting capacitor/s should consider switching to another plugin with a activate timer or use usb wake timers with out screen saver enabled

@Yngvai  - Have you checked in BIOS setup to make sure USB Wake Support is enabled?

Have you disabled "Allow PC to turn off" in Device Manager for all USB and HID devices like I mentioned above? Have you also checked the box for USB and HID devices to "Allow to wake PC"?

Have you disabled all of these on the Advanced Power Settings screen for your active power plan?
