Dell XPS 13 9310, Display issue after installing update!

Hello,

My Dell XPS 13 9310 with the 11th generation i7 processor, Intel(R) Iris Xe Graphics, and preinstalled Ubuntu 20.04 (Kenel 5.6.0.1022-oem) just arrived yesterday. After installing the suggested updates, I restarted the laptop and it has been restarted with flickering/tearing (horizontal lines) and I cannot see and do anything. Then it goes into GNU GRUB options.
I restored the system into the original configuration and have updated firmware to the last version (Ver. 1.1.1) and after installing the updates, it has still the same issue.

I have tried Ubuntu 18.04 and after installing updates the same issue came back again!

Thanks in advance for your comments!

@SimonKaars , dont forget to disable windows updates, otherwise will downgrade to a bad driver.

In fact, I think the original issue is also related to windows messing up the driver while doing updates. When the system comes from Dell it is stable. Then you do all updates and the system goes haywire...at that point, whatever driver you install nothing helps. The only solution seems to be to completely wipe all drivers until just the generic video driver is on the system and then do a clean driver install and then prevent Windows it up again.

Cheers

The video driver on my XPS 13 is Intel Iris Xe Graphics, driver date is 2020-10-28, driver version is 27.20.100.8935.  I am trying to determine whether the driver is the problem?

Is everyone has the display problem has the same driver and version?   Thanks.

Details of my screen problems documented in my previous posting on January 9, previous page in this group.   Since the return expiration date is here, the safe thing is to return the laptop.   Since I like the XPS13, I will just re-order it again when Dell has a sale price same as what I paid for back in December.  I just want to confirm the users having the same problems has the same video driver installed.

patherlee. ah i missed your post. yours seems to be a mush more obvious fault than mine. i just get very occassional faint flicker of the screen. apart from that no frizzes and blackouts.

i have the latest driver through the dell update , same as yours. i am using the 4k screen i7 model

@SWL77 , good to hear that. I hope other people also read this post carefully, so that they can fix their systems.

Yes, the update to Intel build 9126 seems to have solved the problem for me. I've used the machine for many hours over several reboots and no problem at all.

Your solution seems to work.

Thanks!!!

FWIW, I also had an issue with this same xps 13-9310 where the network driver (killer) was disappearing and reappearing on its own seemingly randomly.

Dell recommended an update to BIOS 1.2.5 which seemed to have solved that.

The machine was not updating the BIOS automatically for some reason even though I frequently run the driver update routine.  I had to dig down myself to locate this BIOS.

I turned off accelerated hardware on chrome and so far second day in a row no black screen anymore I guess chrome and other browsers pushing this new system to much that's why it keeps refreshing. anyway thanks for advice

Hi @glzzrn ,

happy to hear it works for you too.

The method you’ve used to disable automatic driver updates is correct. With that being done, you can do your windows update as usual. The only only difference is that the drivers themselves will not be updated by windows from now on. You can update your drivers by manually installing them or through dell’s update utility. You can update/change whatever you want.

Hi @AttilaZ,

Just send you this message to thank you because I think you've found the solution. I've made all the process you've describe and it seems to work fine now (almost a week).

I'm now on firmware 27.20.100.9126 for the Graphic Card, firmware found on the Intel website. The auto refresh is disable like you. On my side, i've put back the 60Hz on the screen, I've put back the material acceleration on Chrome. And everything is fine for now.

For the future drivers updates, i've blocked them using this procedure (it's in french but I think eveyrbody will easily understand) : https://korben.info/comment-bloquer-la-mise-a-jour-des-drivers-sous-windows-10.html

But I have a question : Now, could we make the other updates ? I mean I now have a couple of update waiting ( Intel(R) Corporation - System - 10.29.0.4842  /  Realtek Semiconductor Corp. - MEDIA - 6.0.9075.1) and I don't know if I can update.

I'm curious to know what you've done ?

Thanks,

Gaël

fyi, I have the latest Intel display driver installed, and have never had to disable automatic updates. The Intel display driver does not get overwritten by Windows or Dell updates.  (Not sure why others have a different experience.)

Yeaaaah so I forgot that I disabled the updates for only 7 days and now it installed the updates. To no surprise, the problem is back. I'll do your solution again but sad that it hasn't been fixed yet. Can't imagine they ignore such a frequent bug.

I've never experienced screen flickering, however I had gamma/saturation/brightness issues and black screens. The first issue got fixed by deactivating everything in the Intel Control Panel. As to the black screens, as soon as I deactivated Hardware Acceleration the problem went away, like within an hour. I'm pretty confident the problem stems from Hardware Acceleration insofar as it was automatically turned back on after a Chrome update and as soon as I turned it off, the problem never occurred again. Windows has always been up-to-date and I have the latest drivers from Intel.
