Selected boot device not available
I have a Dimension 4700. This morning when I turned it on: blue screen! I'm going through the steps to recover it (as posted on the Dell Support web site), but I can't get it to read from the CD drive. The blue screen error is "Unmountable Disk Volume" and the hard drive fails diagnostics with "Return Code 7." According to Dell I need to boot to the Windows XP CD that came with the system. When I try to do that, it says "Selected Boot Device not available." I've tried everything I can think of to get it to boot to the cd drive. In the system setup it recognizes the drive. When I move the drive to the top of the boot sequence and restart, I goet the same "not available" error as before. I've searched the net for any help on this,
but no luck.
Any ideas how I might force it to boot from the cd drive? I have both a CD/RW and a DVD drive. The DVD looks like the master and the cd the slave. I've tried putting the cd in both drives to no avail. I'd appreciate any suggestions you can think of!
