I have a home network that shares files and printers just fine.  All works great.  Has for years.  All PCs on XP Home edition.  I purchased new DELL with XP Media edition and this PC can not access or see files on other PCs.  XP Home PCs still work fine and share files.  The Media PC can access or share files.  I have configured the PC just like all the rest.  I have done all the wizards and setup up the network myself.  Nothing works.

 

1) Internet all working fine.

2) I have checked and double checked all workgroup names etc.

3) I can ping the other pcs on the network.

4) It is not Windows Firewall.  I have turned off.  (no help) Other PCs work fine with Firewall on.

5) I have heard about problems with Media on this issue

6) I have unchecked use simple file sharing (no impact)

7) I can see the computers under network connections.

8) I get error message   \\dell2400 is not accessible ....

9) Dell2400 is name of another PC on the home network.

10) I am using Grisoft virus and Webroot Spy Sweeper.  Should not be the problem. 

11) I use static ip addresses.  ping the address works.  ping the pc name does not.
