Could be a firmware issue with the ATA to USB bridge in the maxtor.
Or COULD be software.

You didnt specify what OS we are talking about.

If its 2000 or XP what service packs?

USB 2.0 Speeds REQUIRE service packs.

The OS in question is DOS - please dont give me the rant about it being unsupported.

T0 use Ghost requires DOS - we use this extensively to deploy update versions of the platform (XP and Win2000).

The only thing that has changed appears to be the Dell BIOS which no longer supports
legacy devices.

If Dell choose to do this we will make other arrangements....

Ghost32 doesnt require dos.

Symantec does not support USB drives for imaging.

Symantec Ghost for Windows PE

Ghost32

Ghost 32 is certified to run on Microsoft Windows Preinstallation Environment (WinPE*). Using Ghost32 one can create image files on hard drives that are accessible from WinPE via a variety of methods including the GhostCast Server.

NOTE Regarding Ghost 32 for Windows PE:

Ghost32 For WinPE (a component of the Symantec Ghost MFG 1.0 release) is available as a natural upgrade path to all Ghost 7.5 customers with active maintenance. In order to maintain compliance with your original Windows PE license, please be prepared to provide all Windows PE license agreements when upgrading.

haha, only the wannabees would rant about that.. professionals will not. So that should shed some light on anyone ranting 'bout DOS - it would not be worth your time answering such a post.

Have you tried using Ghost with the -NOIDE or the -FNI switch ?

What seems to help is to change the BIOS settings for the SATA controller to Combination.

we are talking about dos and ghost.exe ... the dos executable can connect to the ghostcast server way faster than it takes to load PE... besides, a dedicated flop for this purpose is more elegant and efficient imho.

Instead of flop you can read bootable cdrom/dvd, usb stick, PXE which loads that very same bootflop, etc etc.

But this is usually only found in companies like Viking seems to work for - where speed and efficiency are of more importance than at home.

I guess when you spend a few minutes loading PE for ghosting at home for 1 system... that's okay. But if you deploy images by the dozens - those minutes add up....

For home users I highly Recommend the FREE digital Dolly.

http://www.innotrix.com/index.htm

Digital Dolly runs completely from a bootable CD-ROM, no installation is needed. Once startup, Digital Dolly

displays an easy to use menu, no commands to remember.

For all other usages, you are allowed to download and evaluate the product for 30 days,
after 30 days, you must purchase a license in order to continue to use the product.

Hey SS,

that sounds nice. I had not heard of it, and i will check it out.

There are more free tools out there, but for a company i would still recommend Ghost.

Dolly does not support multicasting so if someone intends to image multiple machines, they all have to be done manually - and each install will pull the whole image over the network.

Probably make it slow down to an unacceptable speed and even hinder normal other network traffic while simultaneously imaging multiple machines. Say, an W2K or XP image with apps makes an image of somewhere between 1 GB and 3 GB ? Sending that over the network once is okay, but try to copy 10 x 3 GB simultaneously .... not nice.

Last time i checked, some time ago, Ghost cost either 15 EUR per image and even cheaper for a corporate license. More expensive, but for companies the decision usually is a no-brainer. Ghost will be faster or better or have the functionality they need.

I would expect better support in case of problems from a big player than from a smaller one. Availability of resources and big bucks being the reasons - a small company is usually inclined to deliver better support but simply does not have the manpower to deliver that on short notice.

Thanks for the tip though - i will check Dolly out :-)

Ghost works "sometimes" and others not.

I think version 9.0 is out or coming out.

If you decide to get it Go with Binary Research instead of Symantec.

Binary Research is the ORIGINAL maker of Ghost.

They provide MUCH BETTER SUPPORT than Symantec.

Symantec does not discriminate they treat everyone like "exlpative deleted"!

I have used different versions of Ghost in my time, and have *always* found Ghost stable.

Many thousands of different pc's, laptops, servers have been imaged using Ghost, and i have never found a machine that could not be imaged using Ghost.

I highly recommend it.

Can someone please explain to me how my Maxtor Onetouch II firewire/usb ext 200g
drive works at over 1100 mb/minute on a GX270 with the USB legacy enabled yet can only
manage approx have that speed when connected to a GX280 ?

Yes there is no option in the "improved" GX280 BIOS to enable legacy support.

This is particularly frustrating as I use Ghost regularly and the speed issue
becomes a pain when imaging a large system.

Can the legacy option in the GX280 BIOS be turned on ? Will it fix the problem ?

And no the Maxtor is not an old model - bought 2 days ago - latest 200g release.

Thanks

viking58,

Can you tell me what DOS USB drivers you are using to even let DOS see your Maxtor drive?

We're using external Maxtor drives here as well, and would like to image from them, the same way we do with the GX260's and GX270's. But when the USB driver is being loaded on a GX280, it hangs. Haven't found a USB driver yet that will see the drive and not hang.

The best place to look would be here

http://www.stefan2000.com/darkehorse/PC/DOS/Drivers/USB/

The Iomega setup works fairly well.

One address of the HANG issues on Ghost with sata systems is the

GHOST -FNI   switches or   GHOST - NOIDE

Hi SpeedStep,

I've successfully used Digital Dolly in the past and still have the boot disk I burnt. I never did have the pdf manual in your link to www.innotrix.com and the Innotrix site is full of ads and nothing else. Google couldn't find the manual - do you have a link or could you email the manual?

On to my main question - I've upgraded to a SATA drive only to find that Digital Dolly can't see it - anybody have any ideas?

Thanks
