Impact of Creating a new partition on system restore

My Dell Inspiron has a 1 TB drive, and besides the system partitions to support restore functionality, all thus space is allocated to my C drive partition. Now II want to split  this partition into 2 so that I can create a partition for data, will this affect us restore functionality? Can I restore the system without deletion of data on my new partition?

It depends on the version of the recovery software.  On newer systems, the restore process completely wipes the drive and restores the factory configuration.  If you want the ability to selectively restore partitions, make your own backups - there are plenty of options out there that can do selective restores.  Some are even free to use (Macrium Reflect, for one).

Thanks for the response, I am using a six month old laptop and not sure what the version of the recovery is. The system came with Windows 8.I think I will try to image the drive and then do a test to see if it works.

Be sure to turn OFF secure boot before you make the image.
