My Dimension 8200 (service tag 3BCT70J) is having some serious problems. About a week ago, i had been playing Neverwinter Nights for a few hours on it and at 3am, decided it was time to go to bed  So i quit the game, clicked shut down in Windows (ME that is) and watched the icons disappear, the task bar disappear etc, the usual. Then it got to the "It's now safe to turn off your computer" screen that we all remember from the days of AT power supplies. Normally windows shows this screen for less than a second the pc switches itself off (god bless atx) but this time, it stayed on that screen. So i sat there, giving it a few minutes more, before deciding that it had probably just crashed trying to close some program...so i hit the power button; nothing. I held in the power button (i hate you atx!);....nothing....so i was left with no option but to pull the AC cable out of the back....I thought nothing more of it until the morning. I went to my pc, ready for another bout of NwN, but to my horror, the power button wouldn't work. I checked to see if i remembered to put the AC cable back in. Oh, silly me, i forgot to put it back in. So i re-connected the AC, but strangely enough, the fans didn't give their normal little half-second whirr when i put the cable in. I thought that to be quite odd but i pushed the power button anyway...nothing... No power whatsoever. No LED's, no diagnostic lights, no fans powering up...nothing. So i disconnected everything and plonked my case up on the kitechen table, opened it up and poked around a bit, checking that all the wires from the power supply were ok and that the IDE-lookalike cable going to the power button was ok. i closed the case, plugged it back in, still nothing. I thought that maybe the power supply had kicked the bucket, so i went out and bought a new one. Installed it, tested and...you guessed it; nothing. Again. I took a voltmeter to the old power supply, and to my dismay...it was working fine.... So i brought the new PSU back to the shop and out my old one back into the case. I went for a week or so without any NwN-goblin-bashing. Then one night i pushed the power again in one last-ditch effort to wringe some life out of the thing, and lo-and-behold, the diagnostic lights powered up, the Power LED beamed, the fans whirred and the PC started up again. Nothing on my HD was lost. My hardware was all perfect. The only thing strangely out of place was the fact that the pc's clock (in windows) was set to the exact date and time of when i pulled the plug on that fateful eve...why didn't my mobo-battery keep the clock ticking? I thought nothing more of it and updated my clock and date. I went off playing NwN again, happy as larry for another week. then i got bored of NwN and started making some new Saber Hilt models in GMax for Jedi Outcast. I had made 5 already, i was well-pleased with myself and was working on my sixth when suddenly...GMax crashed...I got blue screen errors that "windows is waiting for the close program dialog box to appear". I pressed return and sighed "i hate you windows ME!" then another blue screen error came up with those infernal VXD errors and "WARNING! The system has become unstable blah blah blah" i pressed enter again and windows totally froze. I thought: "bah, stupid blue screen errors, time for the power-button treatment" (ctrl-alt-del wasn't working in windows current frozen state). So i pushed the power button; ...nothing..."uh-oh..." i held in the power button;.....nothing "oh please no...." i pulled out the ac cable. Gave the fans a few seconds to whirr down, put the AC cable back in, pushed the button......NOTHING! Doh....It's been like this for 3 days now.. I tried booting with graphics card and modem removed (i left in both cd-drives, HD and floppy) but to no avail. The graphics card is a Geforce FX 5800 which i installed about 2 months ago but i never had any problems with overheating or anything like that. I don't think this error is related to the graphics card. I fear that it's something more sinister like a screwy BIOS, considering the strangeness with the battery not keeping the clock ticking over. I know that with newer PC's, the power button isn't a switch, it just sends a small electrical jump-start to the BIOS which then powers everything else up. Is it possible that the power button is damaged? I had ruled that one out considering the PC worked for a week after the first incident....but now i'm not so sure, I'm really just clutching at straws here but it's all i've got.
