Access_Violations

After a lightning hit it was necessary to replace my M.B.
Dim3000 3ghz ht turned off. 512mb memory.
Things are generally working but some of my applications abend with access_violation.
I am fairly sure this is not specific to an application. To give one example, when I run STOMP Back Up, I get a access_violation in smew0002.dll. I then proceed to get an access_violation in Dr Watson. This is consistent and reproduceable.
Before replacement of the mother board I ran the back up nightly with no problems.

I have stepped into the Dell diagnostic partition and run the express diagnostics twice with no failures.

If I run in safe mode, seems I run a little longer but same problem occurs shortly after beginning to physically write the backup.

Going into my msconfig and eliminating the startup list makes no difference and I have scanned for virus's w/o success.

Trying to search the Dell knowledge base results in error 500 Server Processing Error, but I am skeptical there would be much in there.

Dr Watson event looks something like:
Faulting application DRWTSN32.EXE, version 5.1.2600.0, faulting module DBGHELP.DLL, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x0001295d.
